It was a Coopers and she picked one off either leaving or coming into the rack I did'nt see the actual hit but it was one of those low level attacks and then swoop up to make the kill.I saw the hawk just as she went behind the rack and when she came into view I saw the PM clutched in her talon's.

I am sorry, we have had that happen right before our eyes too, it is just a sick feeling.

That is a shame. The *only* saving grace is Hawks are opportunistic birds of prey and they typically will only strike an old, wounded, or young bird. It is really terrible to have that happen but it is also nature at work. I'm sorry for your loss, I do hope he doesn't come back!dicklaxt wrote:It was a Coopers and she picked one off either leaving or coming into the rack I did'nt see the actual hit but it was one of those low level attacks and then swoop up to make the kill.I saw the hawk just as she went behind the rack and when she came into view I saw the PM clutched in her talon's.

Sorry for the loss of your martin. I know your are mad and just sick over this. Just know, most of us here have seen this very thing so we know exactly how you feel. Hopefully your martins will become much more watchful for the terrible boogie man. Watching our martins would be so much more peaceful and fun if the hawks didn't come around. Since the hawk was successful, I am sure he will be back but maybe he won't be successful in the the future.

Have you got some decoys up Dick? Put up some more!
We have about thirty of our expected eighty martins back so far.
I was outside with a class yesterday, coincidentally around the gourd racks. In the middle of the class a beautiful and fearless little Sharp-shinned Hawk sailed in right over our heads and pitched up into a nearby tree, intently watching the gourds.
This is always the time of year when we get the most Cooper's and Sharpies, passing through on migration for the most part.

Yes decoys are up,I'm going to try Emil's trick of a decoy on a movable pole and try the confusion factor.
