Was dining (eating) at a restaurant in Clarksville, Mo -- Clarksville Station -- recently after dropping off some plastic gourds I had prepped for the little river town's riverfront martin colony beside the Mississippi River.

Eventually getting to the point...this restaurant has a large patio and recently added these metal swallows, suspended high on tall metal rods. I think it looks nice..even against the snow. Not sure if these are barn swallows or martins!

The restaurant also has some plastic martin houses up and maybe hosted a few pairs last year. Our gourd racks are just a mile or so away by the river.

John:

Looks like an opportunity to help someone start a colony and they already have the decoys in place.

Yes Tim...would be a wonderful location. I spoke with the proprietor some time back and dropped off some brochures. got a polite smile and a nod..but not sure of interest in real martins...we'll see.

I work closely with another local martin landlord on the town's riverfront colony. She and her husband live just few blocks away and have a thriving colony. It's a martin rich area, mostly in Trio housing. A few years ago, this town was in the news about flooding from the Mississippi. A CBS morning live interview with a local vegetable grower was nearly flooded itself, by the sound of chirping martins.

The location is a little far for me, about 1.5 hours north of St. Louis, but I hope to have a little field day educational event at the Clarksville gourd colony this year, and maybe another one somewhere near St. Louis.
