I recently bought a used Lonestar Goliad martin house - 3 floors, 12 compartments. Does anyone have a copy of the instructions explaining how to install it, especially how the winch works, how the cable attaches to the house, etc.
We have the pole ready, with the ground socket cemented into the ground. The winch, with the cable, is already mounted on the pole, but we're not sure how to proceed from here.
Any help would be appreciated.

Peggy,
The Goliad is mounted on the pole before raising the pole. Two sawhorses are helpful or something for the pole to rest on several feet off of the ground. At the bottom of the bottom goliad section there will be a single bolt and washer (or a hole to place one). That is what the cable attaches to. That 1/2 inch long bolt will go on the opposite side of the pole as the winch.
Before placing the units on the pole, run out the cable from the winch to the end of the pole, around the pulley and back down the other side of the pole about 5-6 feet and tape it. Then install the bottom section so that the attachment bolt will be on the same side as the end of the cable--the side opposite the winch. Install the middle, followed by the top section, and install the top piece above the pulley at the top end of the pole. At this point the cable is running up from the winch, between the house and pole, up and around the pulley, and down the other side, between the house and pole. Attach the cable to the bolt on the bottom of the house and winch up any slack. The system is now ready to lift in to the ground socket.
If you add an add a rack to hang gourds under the house, the winch will pass further on through the add a rack and pole, loop around the bottom of the add a rack and attach to a hanging arm bolt of the add a rack on the side opposite the winch.
The goliad is a top notch, functional house that you will get many years of use out of. If cold becomes a concern, you can make nest trays out of foam insulation which will add extra warmth and comfort to the system.

Robbo,
Ordinarily, I would agree with you. However, I have used Trio aluminum houses for a number of years. In each of the houses, we converted the 12 single compartments into double-compartment "suites" and have made wooden nest boxes for the interior nesting compartments. These boxes have worked very well for us, keeping the birds warm and dry. And, they are very easy to clean out and replace nesting material.
The Lonestor Goliad has wooden nest trays that slide out for cleaning. They should be satisfactory, as well, I hope!
