This little guy has been known to fly after the martins from time to time. He is really tenacious about maintaining his territory. But today, there he sat, right on the martin housing, like he wonders where everyone went.

The martins only come back in the evenings now, soon they will be gone for their journey south.

I had just the opposite in size my first year. I live on a 12 acre lake and I had a blue heron land on top of one of my metal houses. The martins flew to the next metal house and just stared at him like, what the heck kind of martin are you.
ImageMite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

Hi Robbo, yes that is a Ruby throat hummingbird. Its hard to get pictures of them because they move faster than I do. I get focused, and then they fly away, aghh.

Dave, Wow, a great blue heron is huge. That must have been quite a sight seeing him on your housing. The reaction of your martins to it is very interesting too. I am always amazed at their different responses to things. It seems like they were curious about the heron, but kept their distance. A smart move I think.
