Martin Colony History: 24 Super and Excluder Gourds on two gourd racks, all SREH. Full occupancy. My philosophy is to maximize fledge % with existing cavities rather than adding gourds to grow colony, thus providing opportunities for new colony expansion. Fledge over 100 nestlings yearly from 24 gourds. Band nestlings in cooperation with state university. 2019 Adendum: Reduced colony size to 12 gourds to focus on more intensive management regimen.

I have eleven ASY pair with eleven nests in various states of completion. two SY birds arrived within the past several days. The SY females paired with a spare ASY male and are just beginning to bring in nesting materials, but not yet in earnest.

I had one ASY pair in 2007, two ( 1 ASY and 1 SY) pair in 2008, 4 pair ASY last year and at last count, which is getting difficult, I have counted 24 martins, of which only 2 are SY birds. I have two converted Trio houses and four Super Gourd and Excluder Gourds on a multipurpose pole. Everything is SREH. I have predator guards installed also.

Everything apparently came together this year as I had ASY birds from the start. Someone either took down a house or two or there was predation. That is the only explanation for abundance ASY Martins.

I assisted one new landlord last year in Westfield and he got an ASY pair that came in and nested in late June. There is another casual landlord who installed one of those plastic barn type houses with crescents and they have three birds this year. I have not yet stopped and investigated further to see how many pair they have. I have seen the three birds from the road.It seems that the population is growing somewhat in our area.

This is my second year as well. I have visits every day (sub adults) but none of them stay. I'm not sure if it's the same bird multiple times or not.

Martin Colony History: Colony started in 2009 with 2 pair.
Currently I have 3 gourd racks with 24 gourds. One gourd rack will be for sy arrivals only.
Bo Eleven gourds 20

This is my second year with martins. Last year I had 2 pair. One that fledged 5, the other nest was lost to bad weather. This year I have 5 pair that are in various stages of nesting. The most has 4 eggs as of today. I have not seen any sy males and am wondering how many sy's have showed up this year. I have 3 sy females that came in rather early. I am thinking it will be a while before we rebound from last year. I have been wanting to ask this question for awhile, but haven't done so.

Hello,

I live near Cleveland, WI. I had 15 ASY pairs and was waiting for an SY pair to fill my last available compartment. Then a starling breached one of my compartments and I did not figure it out right away. I didn't think starlings could get through the SREH entrances, especially because I checked this year to make sure they all were still at the right height. While I was doing the nest checks yesterday I found a starling egg in a compartment which previously had a PM nest. So, I dug out the starling stuff and put fresh nest material in. Then, I had the day off so I ended up spending time hunting them. Got them both yesterday afternoon with the husband's 20 gage. Now I'm hoping on 2 SY pairs, because there are now 2 compartments to fill. Of the other 14 nests, there are between 4 and 6 eggs at this time. I am thinking hatching will begin for most on or about June 10th.

Great to hear from you Les! I sure hope the martins find your place this year. The ones that do will have it good, thats for certain. I was worried for your old colony this year. I thought the birds might not all come back after last summer. They had a real hard time with the weather in July causing many deaths of the young. Then there were bad blowflies, and bad relentless sparrows. One of the best things I ever did this spring was give up the pellet gun for the 20 gage. Now I get a HOSP with every shot. And, the picture you left in the shop of the male and female house sparrow now is on the fridge along with a paper that gets a tic mark every time I shoot one. 50 HOSP marks and 3 Starling marks so far, and I can't believe it, but there are more yet. I can hear them in the trees. Best of luck bringing in the subbies.

Mike the SY's are still showing up here in the Iowa great lakes area. Every day a few more show up. Some of my landlords told me there ASY's were any where from 10 - 30 day's late. And now it looks like the SY's are also running late. I had 3 of my brand new landlords call this week to say they have anywere from 2 - 3 pairs of martins.

Don't give up. Them SY's are still on there way. Hope to see ya on the 4th.

By the way the shorts you gave me, all but one found there mark. I need to get some more. You made a believer out of Me. What go's around come's around. Keep up the good work Mike, it's comeing your way big time.
PM Fanatic and proud Landlord. My goal is 100 pairs and 100 landlords.
