Greetings to all PMCA'ers and fellow purple martin hosts. I apologize for not finding time to monitor the forum this season. The good news is that my martins have returned in good health and good form and it appears that we will have a great sesaon again this year, We did a nest check today and found that egg laying is occuring in 15 of our 48 supergourds. From the looks of things we could have as many as 30 successful pair.

The bad news is that we have found it necessary to sell our home... along with our very nice martin colony... hopefully this year or next. Besides turning 70 years old this summer, my wife, Marilyn and I, have both have some "scarey" health problems; but I will not burden you with the details except to say that we are expected to "live on" if we take proper care of ourselves.

Our place has actually been on the market for a few days now; and I guess I should apologize again for not thinking to post it here sooner. There is a nice internet "showing" at:

I have made many friends here on the Forum; and I hope I have helped a few folks with the Tree Swallow Interference protocol I developed with the help of Del McKinnon and others over the ten years I "played" here on the forum. [It took 8 years to be successful... and then it was only because of finding this forum and finally understanding Tree Swallow Interference.]

To the many friends I have made, it is a privilege to "show off" our colony. To the rest of you, I hope this post will not be seen as a burden. If anyone should happen to have an actual interest in taking over our home and colony, please respond by private e-mail as well as on the forum:

The setting is beautiful here, 7 miles from downtown Indy, and the neighbors are very nice.

I am sorry you have to sell your house Dan. Especially a home there for martins as well. Thanks to you I got my colony started in 2006. Had so many T.S. here it was unbelievable. I took your advice & put up a gourd on a shepherd hook 35' away & closed all the gourds. It worked. The T.S. had little ones by the time a pair of SY's showed up & the T.S. did not bother them. They went to nesting building about a week after they were here. I had 32 pair last year But this year I am getting much more & a pair of ASY's turned the tables on the T.S. They ran them T.S. from the gourd on the shepherd hook. I had to put a gourd up on the end of my 68 foot long porch for them. It was kind of funning in a way. Thank you Dan Drew for helping me get a colony started & the best of luck for you & wife. By the way, that pair of ASY's in the gourd on the shepherd hook has eggs in it now.

Martin Colony History: I moved to South Florida, from Delaware, in August of 2015.

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.


At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.

At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.

Your home is beautiful. I too want to wish you all the best. I can imagine how hard it is to move on at this point in life. We try so hard to get a martin colony and then to make the colony successful as well as get settled in our own homes and routine.

Also, I too want to THANK YOU for the TS advice. It helped me very much when I was experiencing that very problem. WELL DONE, my friend.

Dan, that is a beautiful home. I am sure you are saddened to sell it. Best wishes on the move, and I hope you are going to be moving to a place where you can attract another Martin colony.
