As of today we are still missing over half of our colony from last year which is over 22 pairs. I am wondering if they are just late or maybe they are not coming at all. We are in Maryland on the eastern shore side and wonder how others are doing in this area. It will be disappointing if we lose that many.

I care for a 6 condo Sunset House as well as two Deluxe Gourd Racks, with 24 Chirpynest/Excluder gourds, along a canal in Pompano Beach, Florida.
At Quiet Waters Park, nearby in Deerfield Beach, I care for a Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 TVG's. I also care for a Deluxe Gourd rack with 12 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder entrances. I am substituting 6 Chirpynest boxes for 6 of the Conley II entranced gourds in 2026.
At another local park, Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, I care for a Trendsetter 12, 5 gourds rack with 60 Excluder gourds with Modified Excluder Entrances and 1 Deluxe Gourd Rack with 12 Troyer Vertical Gourds with Starling Stoppers over the Conley II's to keep out smaller starlings.
Hi!
I am not too far from you over in Rehoboth Beach, DE. I too have only six birds back and last year I had 22 pairs. I HOPE that they are just delayed and that nothing happened to them on their migration or while in Brazil. It is a little comforting knowing that I am not alone. Makes me tend to think the migration is just delayed. Hope so.
Keep in touch.

hi marilena,
I am in TN, by this time last year I had 5 pair and as of today I have only 1 pair and this pair was 3 weeks late.
I asked this same question about a week ago and from the responses I got, it appears to be happening all over the place.
I really hope that they are all just late and nothing has happened to all our birds.
Hope yours show up soon and mine too.

- Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.
I have 4 ASY males & 1 ASY female. I think this is pretty normal for me so far. I had 12 pair last year during full season.
Weather plays a major roll. Just read Astrid's posts on the exhausted SY's coming in weak, thin, etc. Makes you wonder what their food source is like in Brazil.

- Martin Colony History: Well established 90 cavity colony. Mostly plastic gourds with some custom cedar houses atop pilings out over the river. We live stream the activity on our website https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXKqSW ... Ph2tywu4eg
We are on the Maurice River. The Maurice is brackish and tidal. It meets the Delaware bay about three miles down at East Point, NJ. The area is remote and consists of dense marshland and swamp. Dragonflies abound.
Swallows arrive in mid August and finish nesting mid July. There is a large annual roost in mid August upriver a few miles at Mauricetown.
The north part of Avalon does not have martins yet. I kayaked around yesterday and there was only one martin between about 10 houses.
In Leesburg, NJ there are only a few returns. Also late.

Migration is far from over—we are still seeing arrivals of large groups of migrants here on the Texas gulf coast. New sites near us just got their first birds (ASYs) a few weeks ago. Subadults will be coming in for a while yet too.
I think martins could still arrive at sites in the south, anywhere in the south, and up north arrivals will continue into early or mid June. Migration was running late by a couple of weeks in some areas earlier this year, but there does not seem to be any shortage of birds. In any case, it is way too early to say yet if numbers are up or down.
Hang in there, everyone! They are coming

I agree Louise. There's plenty of time, especially for us in the North. I picked up another ASY female last night. Keep'm comming. I'll take all I can get

Currently I have 3 gourd racks with 24 gourds. One gourd rack will be for sy arrivals only.
Bo Eleven gourds 20
I live in NW Wisconsin and my 2 pair didn't get here until May 18th and May 20th last year, both ASYS. Actually that is a good time for this part of the country because of late winter storms. I don't think that will be a problem this year though. I'm getting anxious to see how many return. Hope I can get one or two pair at least.

I would actually prefer that our martins would wait and return "home" a couple weeks later EVERY YEAR! Usually, they return to cold and even snow in much of the country.
My first nesting martins, 6 years ago, did not appear at my Trio house until MAY 20th. ASY's too. I tend to believe that they had lost their first nest and this was a second try. Last year I had 22 nesting pairs!
