in our backyard this morning...OMG...it was stunning to see these many martins in one place for a change again....So far I have not seen it all season long in that volume...I am sure many landlords will be very happy this weekend.

Best wishes to all for this 2010 martin season 8)

You can please some of the martins some of the time, but you can't please all the martins all of the time.

Astrid:

Thanks for the update. I remember last year when you made a post stating how many martins where coming in. We are suppose to have another week of nice temps so I look for a continued influx of martins heading north.

Tim,

it seems migration is finally on....late and less, but the main thing is they are back!! The ones I saw today were so healthy looking...big, fat and happy...no worries here. I gave them all a lunch bag for their trip to their families

So Astrid, Igot the So right this time  I appreciate the update!!! I can't wait until they make it to my place. You folks are so fortunate down South to see all these birds, and to have them come in to you guys so early in the season. They have a long trip still to Ky, so if you don't mind, give those that are headed to my place a few extra crickets in that brown bag lunch ;>) Thanks and hope you have a great year!!!! :P

We have an "encore" this morning....I just went out with the puppy Emma and watched our resident martins. We are now up to 10 pairs when another flock of migrating martins came in. They will socialize with our martins for about 30 to 45 minutes and then leave for their homes 8) 8) 8) 8)

They will all have their lunch bags with them to make it save through their travel. Again, these guys also all look great.....healthy, happy and fat.

Enjoy your babies coming home

Thanks for the report and also thanks for feeding and caring for them the way you do. I know when the ones that are on their way to other locations make it home some glad landlord will be smiling with joy and be so happy they made it to their site. I know it must be so exciting seeing so many come through and knowing many landlords will be very happy soon. Good luck and hope you have a wonderful season.

birdy girl,

It is very exciting to see the migrating martins come through the backyard....they are so happy to have made it that far and you can tell so eager to get back to their homes. It is a total different behavior (in my opinion) then when the resident martins come back. They are just glad to be back, give us their "shreek" and off into the gourd.

The migrating birds put on quite a show when they pass through....The past couple of days were very special and this morning especially. I think the exceptional beautiful and warm weather made them sound so happy and they kept circling the colony, then touch down, visit with our martins, fly off again just to do it all over. Usually, this goes on for 30-45 minutes and then they take off.

Of course, if the weather is cold and nasty they stay and hang around and we feed them until things get better and they continue their journey. I hope they all make it safe to their families

Wishing you a wonderful season too and looking forward to your posts

Astrid....keep em coming

The 2nd half of March is the biggest time for ASY migration in North Texas. My colony usually doubles or triples in the next 2 weeks.

They seem to be on schedule.

Thanks for the update.
