With the Saints parade, 9 shivering in the cold

Welcome to the internet's gathering place for Purple Martin enthusiasts

Getting ready to head over the lake to New Orleans for the Saints victory parade, I spot 9 PMs huddled together (7males and 2 females) on the most popular box from last season. They look cold. Bad timing, we might get snow on Thursday. Saints win, birds back and it might snow again! Pigs fly next!

Hey Roy! Wanted to go to that parade myself, but would not dare try to get into the city so late. Traffic reports at 3:30 said that streets were already blocked for miles in all directions.

Later, on TV, one of the commentators said that officials have estimated that there might be a quarter of a million people on the street there tonight for this victory parade. WOW! Who Dat? Wish I had decided to come home and leave early. But it's on all channels here.

Anyway, by being home, I got to see my own martins arrival tonight! So that is even better.

Yeah, it's about 41F right now and dropping in the Houma/Thibodaux area.

Wish I was there too!

My wife and I grew up in Metaire. it was great seeing the Saints win the NFC, go to the Superbowl, and then WIN the whole thing. First class all the way.

You guys have fun at the parade.

Jealous in Round Rock! No PM's seen here yet, no parade tonight!

The parade was unbelievable. Blane Kern was on TV saying it was the biggest crowd he has ever seen for any parade. Probably 250,000 people.
The saints players had a ball. No bad events that I saw or heard of.

It's always full of martins...... waiting to get parts for the pole so I can do nest checks.... martins will be here before you know it!!!! HAVE A GREAT SEASON :!:

Malcom and Joe,

Thanks for the report on the parade. I listened to some of it on WWL AM 870 on my way home from a work event. WWL comes in very clear during the winter here and its good to get a strong dose of YAT every week or so. I still have 4 brothers and a sister in the NOLA area; so we do make some regular trips to get restocked with Brocata's canolies and our Cafe Dumont Beignets.

Yep, I have had good luck with that 20rm house. It has stayed pretty full every year, not necessarily with the birds I want. The last couple of years I have done a better job of "management", controlling the interlopers and keeping it open for the PM's.

Hoping for another good year, and really looking forward to that first morning when I hear those familiar calls as I leave for work.

Have a great season guys. Dave.

What kind of house is a 20 rm hotel? Never seen one before! How big are the compartments?

It's 6x9 compartments . Rooms can be made larger by knocking out the perforated section on the wall and by adding sreh plugs to the opposite door entrances. It's just called a 20 rm. martin house ....18 rooms on 3 floors , 9 each front and back, top attic has 2 rooms divided by a plastic divider , sreh entrances all around . it's like the "red barn" alot of landlords started out with. ANYWAY GLAD TO SEE THE SAINTS WIN!!!!!!!

Malcolm nailed it, it is an all plastic house with 9 6x6 rooms on each side. The 2 attic rooms are a bit larger about 6 x 18.

I don't know who the mfg. of the house was and have never been able to find any on the internet. I inherited the house from a prior owner, have taken it apart several times to clean between seasons, and I have repainted it a couple of times too. I added some extra roosts to the house, so all the PM's had a place to park when they wanted too.

My place is located on a golf course, and the birds just love it. They are in the air almost constantly and make full speed runs back to the house and blast right into their nests with no problem.

However; like Malcolm reported, the house is always full. The PM's really seem to like it, and they fill it up every year. I've never seen any evidence of Hawk or other predation; probably just real lucky. I have seen hawks sitting on top of the house during the winter when the Martins are in Brazil, so I know they know about the location.

An update on the Saints victory parade. Final totals were over 800,000 people! The biggest parade ever! What a week for the Saints, just to kick off Carnival!

Also, snow here on the Northshore. Time for this stuff to get out of here so the birds can thrive. Happy season all

Roykite,

Are plans in the works for another festival this year? Hopefully can make it this year. Good luck with your site and GEAUX SAINTS!
Guest

Yes, this year July 31. We decided to do it a little latter because we had tons of birds every dusk starting about that time. More vendors want to participate. Hope you can make it. Thanks for asking
Joe Zorn

Roy,
I didn't know about that event last year until just a couple of days before...too late to make the arrangements. What day of the week is that? Where, etc.

Hi Joe

This year we are planning to have the festival July 31, Sat. about 6pm-dark on the lakefront. OMBA, (Old Mandeville Business Association) and MOTLCA, (Mandeville on the Lake Civic Association), will team up with various restaurants and vendors to be at the lake front to watch the birds do their thing. Last year we had a great Jazz group from "The Dew Drop Inn" perform. We will do the same this year. Plans are of course not final yet. We will post the info later when the plans are more finalized

What a site, Roy...

I remember seeing the talk about it, but just too late to be able to attend. The wife was in her old childhood stomping gourds of Tyler, TX that weekend, and viewed the Roost there at the Best Buy.

We'll try to be at your party this year. Will write it on the calendar right now.

Thanks.

Joe
