Martin Colony History: I have had housing up at my residence since 2000. I added some additional housing and gourds in 2007, and I have been getting purple Martins in my houses and gourds ever since that time.

I had reported previously that I had a subadult male that has been sticking around, and protecting the house. Now, I have noticed that he has a "friend." I observed them bringing material to the PM house. I'm trying not to get too excited, but this is a good thing right? I have been killing any sparrows and starlings that even look at my houses, so I hope this may turn out good. after 10 years of trying, I am very excited about this. Any info people can pass on to me about what to look out for, or any advise would be well received.

Thanks,

Dave

Way to go Dave!
Bringing in nesting material is always a GOOD THING!
I would be checking the nest every couple of days to see what is really happening and keep looking for those green leaves.
Wow 10 years is a long time and it's so cool when that persistence pays off. Keep up the good job on those S&S. I am sure you will be a great landlord.

Hi Dave,

10 years WOW, I to am in the same boat after 5 years I finally got my first pair and I now have three eggs. I am no expert but like Dave said watch for the green leaves. If there nest building than you can almost beat that your little lady has excepted your sight.

Are you offering egg shells? if not now is the time. She will be at any feeder that you offer her and my thoughts are any platform off the ground high as possible and close to your sight is preferred.

Best of luck to yea :>))

Dave - That is fantastic news, it seems that Ohio is hopping right now for all of us wannabees! I am now up to two birds, one of which I am certain is a sub-adult male (clearly visible splotch of purple on chest and above left leg). I'm getting ready to post my own question, but just wanted to say congratulations!

Thank you all for your vote of confidence! I'm a little Leary of checking the compartments just now, since I don't want to scare them off. However, the male has been here almost 2.5 weeks, so maybe he won't go anywhere.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Dave :)

Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

Congratulations Dave,

It is always great to hear that a wannabe becomes a new landlord.

I hope this year goes well for you, and that this pair may pull in another pair or two.

Good luck,

Bill
