Yea Dave I miss him too, he has helped me a whole lot through the years...
Emil and I get our birds about the same time so I'm looking. BUT they are starting to put our new roof on today so that might scare them off. Very Loud!

Donna,
We had our roof redone a couple of years ago after the birds were back. At times the roofers were only 10 feet from the martin systems and at eye level with them - the martins didn't seem to care.
The pounding (this was a tear-off and replace from the bottom up, not just new shingles) was so loud my dogs were very unhappy and kept looking for safe places. But martins seem to be very adaptable and tolerant, thank goodness! I would bet your birds will be just fine with it all.
Louise
PS, maybe, since you have a nice new roof, it will bring us some rain.

Thanks Louise! I was a little worried. They are starting on the house first and then the garage which is only 5 feet from the poles so I guess they will get an eye level too.

Donna,
Check out this thread, and photos, from Mike Scully.
Really amazing how much of us humans they'll tolerate!

Amazing pictures of what they will tolerate...I don't know what is louder though them doing the roof or my dogs barking.

Hi Dave--I miss Emil too! He helped me with alot of questions.
Donna-we had our roof done a couple of years ago, when it was fledging time, they tolerated it pretty well. It is so noisy though!
Any day now is time for my martins to show, I hope they wait until the end of the week, since the weather is supposed to be so bad!
I wish it would rain, there isn't any bugs around.

I had the same experience as Louise. About 10yrs ago I had my roof replaced. My colony house is less than 20' from the roof. The birds seemed to enjoy supervising the work/all the commotiion.

- Martin Colony History: Area is rural. Offer 28 compartments...metal housing (Lonestar Goliad) & Supergourds all w/crescent entrance holes. Purple martins are abundant here and eager for quality, well maintained, safe housing. Expect near 100% occupancy this season.
Located about 200 yards behind my property is a natural gas drilling pad. Deep beneath North Central Texas lies the Barnett Shale, a vast expanse of natural gas. To many of the area residents (myself included), the industrial activity and noise is unwelcome. When drilling or fracing takes place, the noise is at times unbearable, and can last for several weeks. It hurts the ears at times to remain outside when operations are underway. I used to worry that the noise and commotion would scare off the martins. They are completely unfazed by it. The activity does not appear to bother them in the least.

Come to think of it the noise from those gas wells probably help the martins at night Owls probably cant hear them over the noise.
PMCA member and Martin fanatic....
2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows.
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest
2019 Same old story................

You know Donnie, you may be on to something. The intense drilling noise is fortunately intermittent (maybe a couple of times a year). There are, however, huge lift compressors on the site that rumble and roar 24-7. To date I have not had a problem with owls. I know we have great horned owls in the area. I see and hear them often. Maybe the compressor noise does help protect the martins from owl attacks.
