For anyone giving a martin program, open house, you name it—this booklet, available free from the PMCA, is designed to help you supply the information you'd like your guests to have.

It's the same information included in the center section (pgs 19 through 31) of the Martin Market Place. It covers everything from attracting and managing a martin colony, to various PMCA cooperative research projects. The booklet includes the basics on supplemental feeding, features to look for when choosing martin housing, starling-resistant entrances, predator guards, large compartments, etc.

We will provide the booklets in quantity at no charge, just call (814-833-7656) or email ([email protected]) to tell us about your event and how many booklets you could use. Please post your meeting or event on the Events page, http://www.purplemartin.org/meetings

and thank you for all your Help ,you are a blessing , I would like 35 to 40 to pass out and talk about at our next meeting of the PMLNT on Feb 5th , I have all of our info posted on the events calender as well as on the forum, we also have some new members that have just joined our local group ,do you need my home address???, you shd have it, let me know and i will send it to you. Hi Louise,

I plan on a neighborhood nest check day but this will be mostly for kids, are the booklets kid friendly. I would still like to have some though if you can spare some now. Since we lost our fence in the hurricane people can see my houses from the main road and come by and question me on what are they for and what is a martin. Thanks, Donna

I Did NOT Know the PMCA had these! This is just what I need for the 5 or 6 public programs that I have each year at Bernheim Forest.
I was recently looking through the 2009 PMCA Martin Market Place, and thought the middle section of the catalog..... HECK, The whole MMP catalog would be great to pass out to folks new to martineering AND Long-time landlords as well.

Please send me 50 to start out with. I bet I ask for more later...These will be nice to keep with me when I check the nests at the public sites. Many times I'll have someone walk up and ask questions.

I also keep in a carry case file... several downloads from the front page of the PMCA website. I'm sure other folks use these too... Thanks for all the PMCA has taught me. These are great tools to pass on to new folks to martineering.

We'll send booklets out to all who have requested them - this booklet is our standard hand-out item for martin events and we are happy to supply them.

Donna, the booklets are not kid-UNfriendly but they are really aimed at landlords. If you have any of the last couple of year's of Updates, most contained a kid's page at end of each issue, called martin-ology. Those would be nice for kids, if you chose one or two to copy for them. We'll work on some ideas for a kid's handout too, though. We also have some bird activity sheets we developed for kids' events. Let us see if we can come up with anything, but keep the martin-ology pages in mind too.

We're glad so many landlords are willing to share their martin expertise and enthusiasm with neighbors and with the public :-)

Donna is making a very good point here...

The officials and educators at Bernheim, is really hoping that one of the 2 colony sites I manage there thrives and attracts a large colony of Purple Martins.

The other site, located in "prime martin real estate" ... IS Doing very well, but it is not near the building where most of programs start out at.

They have made comments about... "It would be nice if the colony near the education building does well. Most all programs start at that point, and many folks see and ask questions about the gourd rack. This would be a great place to stop with children on field trips from school. Even with tight schedules, children would have a few moments to see and learn a little about Purple Martins.



So...
I'm just speaking "out loud" for many others. A " Child Friendly " hand-out would be very nice. The programs that I've had about Purple Martins... You can always get the adults attention, when their child comes running to see baby martins on my video of nest checks.

Thanks again to everyone at the PMCA for not losing focus and continuing the non-stop Purple Martin Conservation.... and being the leader in martin education.

PS Did you ever receive the private message I sent you just before Christmas? I suggested a short kid-friendly video then - handouts are an excellent idea too.

Hi Nancy,

Congrats on your scout, and we'll get some booklets out to you. Sorry I missed that message but it is retrieved now. The full length martin video could be used by showing just a portion to kids, I think. I would have to take it out and look at it to see which section would be best.

Larry and others, we are going to work on some information to use as a kid's handout page. Good idea and should not be hard to do. Thanks for all the helpful input.

Hey Louise,

It seems that my front yard and Bob's are"open houses" as all our purple martin housing is located there! Folks often drive by and look and others stop to talk about our two martin colonies. I try to give them as much information about purple martins as possible and always refer them to the PMCA. Many times folks want to buy the housing that I am using and I encourage them to check out the PMCA's online shop.

Since I am often sharing information about martins with folks who stop by my house, I believe those booklets would be a big help in educating the public over here. I greatly appreciate the PMCA providing this information as it is definitely needed.

I will be requesting some of the booklets to share with the many folks over here in northwest Louisiana and eastern Texas who stop by to see our large purple martin colonies.

Unless pages 19-31 have been "re-ordered," this is to suggest PMCA do a renewal/re-evaluation of the booklets.

Specifically, I believe the first few pages should avoid too much "technical and data gathering information--make 'em "visitor friendly."

Rather,here are some suggested ideas for the first few pages:

1. Pictures of the PM progression from egg to fledgling

2. Pictures to distinguish ASY males, ASY females, SY males, SY females.

3. p.30 How to attract.....

4. p.31 How to Manage....

5. Pix of scout arrival map, possibly S.A. migration map

Suggest the more "technical" Project Martinwatch and Nestwatch Data Sheets be last.

I got these hand-outs in the mail today and they look great !! Packed with all the great info from the PMCA... Great ... Absolutely great hand-out for folks wanting to know more about martineering. They are printed on "light purple paper !!! ..... Really look good !!

Congrats to everyone that has posted on this thread. Martins depend on humans for housing.... we love our colonies, and it's great to see so many thinking about sharing martineering to others.

The Information Booklets arrived , I will be passing them out to potential martin Landlords that i see and also at our feb 5th meeting and if i have any left I will pass them out at our BBQ Luncheon on feb 7th as well.

Martin Colony History: The 1972 St. Agnes flood wiped out all the Martins in my area. One day, in 1997-98, 5 or 6 Martins landed on the power wires crossing my back yard. I had no house for them. They kept coming back day after day. We got a martin house a few weeks later & they have been coming back every year since. I average 12-15 pair per year.

Louise:

Are the Information Booklets still available? The local Audubon Society is scheduled to do a event at my site & I'd like some of these to hand out.

Martin Colony History: Taking care of 11 active public colonies and trying to start two more in northwestern PA. Also attempting to restart another one in southwestern PA, in Collier Township's Hilltop Park. In 2017, not sure what happened but the ASY male returned and then a couple of weeks later he was gone. It could have been weather related. No other birds showed up. I had a starling nesting at the Public site that I had trouble getting rid of.
In 2018, we fledged 629 martins at all of the sites.

These Informational Pamphlets are great.

I have mailed out over a hundred and some to landlords in PA, mostly Amish in the eastern part of the state.

One thing that is nice, is that I can attach a business card to the Informational Pamphlet, as well as adding a single 8.5 x 11.5 sheet of paper with written information in an envelope for the cost of a regular stamp. It comes in right under the weight requirement, so it works out well.

Although the Information Pamphlet needs to be folded in half, it makes it much more cost effective for us trying to help landlords that don't have access to this information.

This is what makes the PMCA such a great organization that we need to support! What other organization is out there that helps Purple Martins like the PMCA.
