Fellow birders - I'm sure most everyone has started counting the days until our Martins show up once again and all the fun begins. In the meantime, check out www.operationmigration.org. That's the organization that leads the young Whooping Cranes with ultralights from Wisconsin to Florida every year. They do an excellent job of updating we "Craniacs" on the migration through postings and pictures in their field journals every day. The 14 chicks have made it to their last stopover in Wisconsin and weather permitting, they'll be on to Indiana tomorrow. Keeping up with the Whoopers has kept me entertained while waiting for my most favorite birds to return to Central Florida. You'll find it fascinating!
Good luck to everyone in 2009.

Nancy,

Great post and thank you for the link.....I love the Whooping Cranes. We do have some in our area before/after they migreate 8)
Fortunately, I am (hopefully) down to 96 days waiting for my martins, that is if they keep the same schedule as the two prior years.

Astrid - Watching the ultralights and cranes land at their destination here in Florida is definitely one experience on my "bucket list". Until I retire and can get over to the west coast of Florida at daybreak for the chance to see them, I'll just have to settle for viewing the great pictures they post on that website. Imagine how it feels to be flying in that ultralight with cranes off each wing - makes you wish we could fly with our Martins that way doesn't it?
