John,
I am so sorry to hear about the dead babies and the missing eggs. I would also think a snake or squirrel....
After years of never having seen a snake at our site, last year I did put up some bird netting after reading about all the snake attacks on the Forum. Two days later we found a 6' rat snake in the netting of one of our systems. Do you have some bird netting on your poles? It might even get the squirrel....
Best wishes that the remainder of this martin season!!!!!!
