Just wondering. I put up two a couple weeks ago, but so far no takers. Theres atleast 10 SYs hanging around aggrevating everyone, but no intrest in the Bo's. There about 5' away from my Sgs, so I know they see them. Has anyone used them in combination with other gourds/

Thanks

Mine hung on the rack for 2 weeks with nary a peek inside. I painted the inside brown and the birds started checking them out and going inside within a couple of days.

We have six Big Bos up, all in their original "translucent" form (since amended by S&K) and three more with the tunnel entrance added on (recommended).

All of them were occupied early, and at this point are doing better in terms of occupancy rates and eggs laid than our ten Supergourds and ten Naturelines.

I have one up, and it's occupied. I had two last year, and they fledged 5 each.

Chuck,
I had only 8 gourds last year hanging below the wooden houses. 4 Big Bo's and 4 very cheap hardware store plastic brown gourds.

The Bo's were ignored. The cheap plastic gourds were full.

Those plastic gourds were only 7-1/2" diameter, with 2-1/2" entrances and no clean-out ports. All that had to be changed. Really junk, to be honest. The PM's preferred those trashy plastic things, once painted white.

This year I have all four plastic gourds full again, two of two Folgers plastic 39oz coffee cans with 5 eggs each, and the Big Bo's have one nest with no eggs yet.

All the gourds are distributed on three wooden poles. Some of each on each pole. So it is not a question of pole location. The PM's jus dont fancy them. AMEN.

Nest year, the Bo's are gone. I will be saving coffee cans all year, you can bet!

Well, I guess I'm going to have to take up coffee drinking... this late in life!

Hey Joe - Can you post a picture of how you make and hang the coffee cans? Sounds interesting!

That does sound interesting. Maybe you can offer the big bo gourd to another bird for a nesting opportunity.

Sherry, Steve,
The coffee cans are the plastic 390z size. I mounted commercial made SREHs with nuts and bolts to the snap-on lids. Flush porches on the outside. No porches inside.

I tried one entrance on the bottom of the cans, but that put the snap on lids at the back very near the pole, hard to peer into. Also, the eggs want to fall out if you take the back off to quickly since the mama lays the eggs right at the back.

As for mounting...I simpley screwed the handle portiion to the bottom of my wooden house floors with wood screws and small hole-large diameter washers.. Right through the plastic to the wood.

I have a pic here that I posted a week or two ago. I will findit and post it here
