Re: Perch/porch for gourds

Since you have some empty ones you could I have extra, and when I do a nest change I simply swap gourds so the change is quicker. I clean the used gourds later. All my gourds have the same opening so that doesn’t matter. Hopefully you bought porches or are able to cut the porch to fit the gourds wel...

Re: Dead chicks and a male ASY found

:-( At this time Rob I am ruling out any kind of predator causing this. No physical damage to young from any hosp. Young all had bloated bellies. Only the adult male ASY appeared to have a broken foot in a cavity of 5 young with 2 survivors. Neither of those had blown up bellies. I think they all go...

Dead chicks and a male ASY found

:-( Ready to do some nest changes yesterday, found 22 chicks dead in 5 cavities, a male ASY which had a broken foot. No mites to be seen but nests appeared to be damp. Heavy sideways rain with winds last Sunday. Traveled to Philadelphia area for 10 days and all was good before I left. Oldest chicks ...

Re: Numbers down in Florida??

I am about the same now as I was last 2 years. 7 ASY couples, all have 5 or 6 eggs. My #1 couple last 2 days now have pinkies. No SY yet, but I think that is what the ASY want. My 2ND house had all SY which never really had the fledge percentage as the ASY. I would like to see at least 1 SY couple i...

Re: Me and my birds

Happy New Year Mike! Sorry to hear of your 2 Martins. I had 2 show up the 18th and put up my house the 19 th but Martins did not settle in till the temps rose and the drizzle stopped a little over a week later. First 3 females, then the males about a week after. Good luck this season!

Re: Last of the fledges

8) Here’s to one eye Tom! I sweated Beryl when it was still in the Atlantic. Sounds like most of us are winding the purple season down. This past year was the first time my #1 Asy pair had 3 eggs, 3 fledged ,started to remodel the nest then gave up the gourd to a pair of SY which laid and fledged 5 ...

Re: wet Troyers

I use an extra gourd when doing nest changes, if you bed the extra ready with pine needles and mite powder or liquid seven spray you can do a change in no time. If you work in a clear plastic bag you could transfer the chicks via inspection port. A little tricky but I think it could be done.

I do have 2 house cavities with 4 unhatched eggs and 1 hatchling in each both of witch are growing slowly. 1 very slow forming feathers and kind of lays flat all the tim...

Re: 2023 die off / 2024 returning numbers study at this site

2023 I had seen eggs non viable in 2 cavaties total of 10 eggs. A few cracked and 2 of 3 with a different female did fledge. The same cavity 2024 only produced 3 eggs which all hatched and should fledge sometimes this week. 2 other cavities with a total of 10 eggs non viable and only 1 chick in each...
