Re: Cameras
if you have wifi at home, for roughly $200 you can get a PTZ camera (point, tilt, and zoom) and it's totally weatherproof . Mine is 40X zoom meaning my houses are over 300 feet from the house yet I can zoom in so that the farthest house down by the pond will completely fill the screen! A free App on...

Re: How did you provide heat to your PM houses?
up in Ohio, I wrapped heat tape around my core of myT14 martin house. These tapes are intended for water pipes in barns. The plug of it has a thermostat which turns on when temps get below 38 degrees. I honestly don't know if it will help since I got my first pair in May 9 last year. Good luck this ...

Re: Worm gear
Amazing deal at Harbor Freight. $34 gets an assembled worm gear with a hex head for either the included hand crank, or for directly connecting my Milwaukee hand drill! I did a lot of searching and didn't find anything even close to the price anywhere else.

Re: Remote Control HOSP Trap
I've had similar experiences. Especially on t14 houses. i have had a couple "inventions" over the winter that have proven useful. one is a passive, and the other is active, but no remote control. they work because nothing is visible from the outside. if you are on facebook, join ohio purpl...

Dan, I'm in an identical situation. 7th year trying. 4 houses and a gourd rack. open flyways, pond, colonies nearby, keeping sparrows at bay, had an unpaired male last year, but nothing so far this year. I hope your male finds a mate who likes the spot. The next 3 weeks are critical. good luck.

subadult mistake
My apologies to northern Ohio martin watchers. Last week, I tried to report the arrival of an ASY to My daughter's place near Sugarcreek, and accidentally clicked on the SY entry location. I did try to correct it after the yellow dot appeared, but couldn't find a way to edit it. Sorry, the subbies a...

hi dan. your history looks the same as mine one state west. i've been trying or 6 years and have been teased every year with lookers and loners. i hope we both strike gold, no, wait, purple next year. one thing we are getting are loads of tree swallows. we also are getting more rose breasted grosbea...

Ignore this post if you don't want to get lost in tech weenie world, but jump to the last paragraph if you have 1. a spare cell phone and 2. access to a blue-tooth speaker. there you'll see a fairly simple way to get a repeating dawn song going. ok, tech weenies, 2 years ago I found in a drawer an o...

7 adult martins at ohio wannabee location
I've been burned before, so I'm tempering my expectations, but while waiting for subbies to get to northern Ohio, look what spent a miserable weather day at my houses yesterday! They are all ASY so might have just been sitting out bad weather on their way to their homes but hope springs eternal here...

Are you sure it's not multiple shots of one bird landing? Look at the identical white marking under the wing in 2 of them.

ASY at my daughter's
Hey, this is Tim Boyd from Just south of Sugarcreek, Ohio. I've been trying for 5 years and this year, I've Moved a couple houses down to the pond. They're further from trees, and closer to water, but sadly, pretty far from the house. But this post is regarding my daughter's successful first year an...

Re: A newbie with calendar and ID questions
you have tree swallows now. did the birds last year have the distinctive loud melodic chirping? if not, i'll bet you have returning tree swallows which are territorial and might defend keeping martins away. if you put a tree swallow style box up about 50' away, and block the opening on the martin ho...

Re: a scout to early in New Concord,oh
Hi, Dick. Tim Boyd here. I'm surprised you reported ahead of southwest Ohio since they usually report more than a week ahead of your area. I wasn't planning to start my morning drives through Sugarcreek Amish country for a couple weeks yet, but maybe that will change? I'm still getting ready for ope...

1000 scout dropoff in 2016
Could someone who has been around for a while give me a suggestion as to why there was a huge drop off in martin scout sightings in 2016? I was playing around with the scouting reports going back through the last few years, and see that the records show around 3700 reports per year till 2016 when th...

Re: Adding More Perching Space To Gourd Racks And Houses
you're welcome. pictures are another problem in this website. a large or high def picture is simply dropped out with no warning that it is too large and needs reduced in quality. However you can link to pictures and videos already on the web. the good thing in the web site is the scout arrival map. ...
