We have Martins.
Our first adult Martin arrived at about 8 this morning. About 15 minutes later two other adults joined him. He went to the same gourds that they went to last year so I guess he was here last year.

Neighbor has a Purple Martin in Arkansas
Yesterday my neighbor, Reba called to say she and her husband Lavern had spotted an adult male. They beat us this year. We usually get one first. So the first Martin in our neighborhood was February 10, 2023.

First arrival of the season.
Our first Martin arrived around 8:30 this morning. I really didn't want one until we could have warmer weather, but at least it didn't come the last of January like one did last year. The temperature is 37 degrees and cloudy. We will be putting out eggs and shells if it stays cold.

new arrivals in southeast Arkansas
A male and female came in on February 8 and I saw three males this morning. Our early bird that arrived on January 26 will not be lonely any more. Just hope it stays warm enough for the birds to feed.

Good News
Our Martin that came on January the 26th is still here. We have had a few warm days and that has helped a lot. We have not had to feed him yet. The south wind has been blowing and it is a warm day so he may get a few friends this week. My husband is putting up more gourds today.

Adult Male here
We have an adult male flying around our gourds. I was watering my backyard chickens and heard him. This is too early for Martins in southeast Arkansas but I guess he doesn't know that. February 3 has been the earliest we have had them come back. Unless he decides not to stay, I will be buying cricke...

Haven't tried crickets this year.
We have tried crickets before and did not have any luck. If God blesses us and we get our Martins back, I'm going to get crickets. Also, when they all come back this spring, I'm going to flip crickets to try to train them for next year. My husband made me a sling shot for this.

Freezing weather in Southeast AR
The Martins can't find food and will not take food from us. We put out eggs and shells but that didn't work. One fell out of the house; I tried to feed it but it died in my hand. We had three more that have disappeared. We don't know if they are dead or alive.

Martins take over Fly Catcher nest
For the last three years we have had a pair of fly catchers build in a single gourd under a tree between two buildings. About two weeks ago a pair of ASY martins took over their gourd after fighting with the fly catchers for two days. The fly catchers had started building a nest and now the martins ...
