They generally lay eggs in the morning hours. Nest checks are best done in the afternoon to early evening hours while they are usually out feeding.

does anyone know if there is a certain time of day that the females tend to lay their eggs? wanting to do nest checks but don't want to interfere with egg laying. thanks! Rick

is it safe to put sevin powder under a nest that does not have a tray in the cavity?

thanks everyone for the responses! how much powder are we talking per nesting cavity? 1/2 teaspoon? more? less? and apparently it doesn't need to be spread out evenly under the nesting tray? thanks again, Rick

i have at least 2 pairs at my site this year, even more lookies! i can't remember in the past when i added some of the Sevin powder under the nesting tray to prevent mites. before they lay eggs, or wait til they lay eggs and hatch? thanks, Rick

Hi, wondering if anyone knows where the martins are roosting this year, i did some research, and many were saying that the birds were out east near the Golden Corral restaurant....we went there last night, and saw TONS of gackles, but no martins? Are they over at the Waterfront again, or elsewhere? ...

anyone know where the martins are roosting this year? they seem to have moved around several times over the past few years. thanks, Rick

thanks for the info!! we were just east of Douglas and Washington last nigh just before sunset, and saw 10's of thousands of martins, but weren't sure where they were roosting! last year they were roosting just east of the railroad tracks over by Via Christi Hospital....Rick

Tony.....don't know the address exactly, but easy to find. it is AT the corner of Murdock and Mead literally. about a block or two east of the old roost...tens of thousands of birds last night. spectacular!!

i went and checked out the Wichita Ks. PM roost last night for the first time, had really no idea what to expect...WOW, it was amazing. i was sitting within 30 ft of the trees that the martins were roosting in, so needless to say, i had to duck my head a few times! i have a ASY male that has been hanging around for several weeks, and has also been spending the night for over a week now. is this a pretty solid indication that i should have at least one pair this year? thanks! Rick

Hey Rick, glad to hear you did some improvements around your house. Should definitely help you have better luck attracting some martins. I have 16 here, with 6 inches of snow..fed them crickets fri ( 600) and had planned to feed more Sunday, but wind was 25mph here..hope to feed more today..good lu...
