Umstead Bridge Roost

Just returned from the Martin Festival at the Umstead Bridge and it was a wonderful experience. Alisa did a wonderful job getting this organized. The day was beautiful but hot and there was a great turn out. Sandy Bunn did a great job explaining how to convert your gourds into a wonderful Martin home. There was gourd painting for children, a Raptor exhibit. I was responsible to keep the festival moving and the Raffles. All of the people I spoke to said they enjoyed the day so much and hope it will continue next year. The most exciting part of the day for me was watching the Martins return to the roost. This is one of the most exciting things I have ever witnessed in my life. We were in a boat approx. 200' from the bridge watching the Martins assemble watching them as they form 4 funnel clouds, then dive down toward the water and begin to roost on the bridge. They fly approx. 1' off the water and then land on the I beams. The noise they make as the position themselves on their spot is deafening. The stream of Martins lasts for 10-15 minutes. It is such a wonderful site and experience I do not have the words. You have to see it for yourself. I will have pics and movies later!!!
