- Martin Colony History: 2023 two gourd racks 24 gourds ,kept no records. Became an official landlord. 2024 28 gourds keeping records.
This being my third year of a Martin Landlord has been such a blessing to me. The colony is thriving as it seems all thirty of the nesting boxes are occupied. I also have two boxes with tree swallows, one with Blue Birds and one possibly with House Wrens. This morning as I was reading the Word of God I heard a chirping that I did not recognize. When I looked out my screen door there stood on my deck a Blue Bird fledging, as if it was saying “ hey look I’m out and flying.” This made me think of how often birds are mentioned and used by God in the Bible. My favorite time of the day is between 7:30-8:00 in the evening as the Martins are busy getting that last meal before diving into their gourds. I have been giving the highest honor and privilege by the grace of God to Shepard a small fellowship of His people. I have found that as I carry out my duties and responsibilities in the Church that the same principles carry over to being a landlord. As an Elder I am responsible for the care and safety of Gods people. I must study to make sure I am feeding Gods flock with correct doctrine that they may grow and thrive in Christ. As a land lord I must protect the colony from their enemies and provide a safe environment. I have found it takes a due diligence with perseverance to have a healthy ,thriving colony. We battle the arch enemies, hosp and starlings and never give into them. We do nest checks to make sure parasites have not invaded along with always keeping a watchful eye on our colonies. We suffer loss and heartbreak but at the end when our colonies are thriving the joy and blessing are so much greater than all our trials and heartaches. I commend you all as landlords and encourage you to keep going. Always remember “ weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Love and God bless you all.

Well said, mstan.. well said, sir.. I’m always thankful to God whenever I can help any of his wondrous creations.. and purple martins are certainly that.. HOSPS, starlings, and hawks that go rogue, don’t fit in that category.. I believe God understands why!

I too believe that Purple Martins are a blessing from God. And if you don't manage your colony responsibly, that blessing will be taken away. I estimate only 1 in 10,000 people who live within their range, have a successful martin colony. That makes you a .01 percenter. Purple martin landlords literally are "chosen ones" when you do the math. This is my 2'nd year as a landlord. It's the greatest blessing ever bestowed upon me. I consider it one of greatest accomplishments. Successful Martin landlords are an exclusive, elite club that I'm proud to be finally be a member of. Kudos to all martin landlords. You are special and you KNOW it.
