A young martin has been on our house for about a week, taking a liking to the top floor of our T14. We are trapping sparrows, but there are still some flying around the house and that have nests. I witnessed the Martin fighting with a sparrow, like it was protecting the territory. Is this normal behavior? Seemed like the Martin started the fight.

Sounds like the martin has claimed the cavity.

I always thought the Sparrows would be the instigators! Well I hope he did claim the cavity, now he just needs a female!

Oh they are. He recognises the threat. If you hope to keep martins, id suggest rid the house of sparrows.
The martins fight ok outside the cavity, whole other story in the confines of the cavity. Sparrows will out compete martins 9 times out of 10. Some larger colonies with well established birds have a better chance.
