I did what will probably be my last nest check of the season today. I am leaving town tomorrow for two weeks and by the time I get back there will be too many old enough to jump if I start messing with them. This year I have 67 active nests out of 68 cavities. The last couple years I have hit the 60's but never 67 out of 68. All of the nests except 3 had eggs or babies in them and those three had green leaves and appear to be being used. Right before the eggs started hatching I put a small amount of Seven in each compartment and no signs of mites. Hopefully all is well while I'm gone. I did lower my units a couple feet just in case there are any winds while I'm gone. I was short on time today getting ready for the trip so I did not get a count on the eggs and babies but most nest had at least 4 eggs and I would say 5 is about the average. One nest had 9 eggs originally and 6 had hatched and were about a week old. Assuming the normal percent fledge it is going to be a good year again this year.

Wow Flyin-lowe, great season! That’s a ton of martins! I bet your backyard at fledging time is soooo cool to watch! Have a good two weeks, you’ll be greeted by many happy martins when you return.

Martin Colony History: 2019 - Sighting
2020 - Pair investigating
2021 - Got 2 eggs. HOSPs poked holes in them. Commence HOSP reduction
2022 - Off to a good start, tree swallows took over and Martins left
2023 - Off to a good start, Martin population dwindled and they eventually left
2024 - New standalone pole and gourd rack. High hopes for success!

Nice work.

Is it tough to leave during the activity? 😊

Good numbers! Yeah, think there's a point as they are just about to fledge where monitoring and interceding if needed is best. Have a safe trip.

Almost every year our family vacation falls sometime during the end of the fledge season. This year we went early and are gone for two weeks instead of just one. Curious to see what I have when I get back but should still have a majority of the youngens there, they will just be too old to lower the housing. Don't feel too sorry for me, I am in Honolulu.....
