Did a NestCheck on 24th May. No issues. Might have two nests with eggs abandoned.. and one late batch of eggs being incubated.. gonna be a late June/early July fledge time for those.
Quite a few cavities will be fledging any moment through next week.
Adults quite busy with feeding.
Happy Memorial Day to everyone.

Did another nest check yesterday— so many ready to fledge I only checked a couple of cavities..
2 compartments have all fledged.. 7 of 7 and a 6 of 6.
One compartment fledging today.. looks all good.
Checked on a late mest and have three hatchlings.. removed a dead hatchling. Looks like these are 2 maybe 3 days old.. so late June maybe very early July.
Two other nests with eggs appear to be abandoned. And one of those that had 5 eggs, now has only 1. Probably an SY male at work.
Was able to spot a cute little PM take to flight thos morning.. very exciting to watch.

Nest check yesterday. Lots of fledging happened over past few days.
Only 4 compartments with nestlings remain. 2 due to fledge any moment.. 1 in maybe a week.
And 1 late nest around 1 July. Only one remains on this compartment out of 4. Removed one dead a day or two after hatching. And two have disappeared since. One remains. Seems healthy.
Discovered a young one on the ground and returned to most logical compartment.
Couple of HS try to investigate the rack but they seem to get chased off quickly.
Season winding down.

Dsonyay, thank you for your care for the martins. I am located in Farmington Mo. . It’s all the landlords that watch and care for their colonies that makes it possible for us a little further north to establish our own colonies. I will miss the martins when the head back south and will look forward to their return next spring. Thank you
Stan

Oh man, I should have videoed all the fledglings coming in for the night. It was quite a sight.
Watching all those uncoordinated landings coupled with adults picking on them was pretty interesting to watch. One little fella hit the side of his house, then nearly flew into the wall of my house.. poor fella landed on my roof— rested, then went inside safely. Those adults are brutal. It’s like an initiation going on.
Gonna try to video tomorrow.

Did a nest check yesterday on remaining cavities.. so, only one cavity left to fledge and those should be ready to go at start of next week.. Monday.
Two other cavities have fledged completely..
And the one with late hatchlings had zero survive out of 4. The remaining chick was dead yesterday. I have no idea what happened there. They did not seem to be abandoned, but the last couple days feeding had stopped. Maybe they were sickly and parents knew it? Who knows.
So my season will end next week.
Overall an excellent season.
The last couple of days it has been very exciting to watch all of the newest juveniles flying in at night- And There are many.. those awkward landings are true entertainment.
Take care— best of luck to all.. will post again when the last batch head out into the world.

Thank you for posting video. This will help me identify the fledglings. Congrats on a successful season. I really like your rack set up. Stan

No prob

I wish I could’ve shot better video, but I was using my iPhone so the quality is not exactly professional. Watching this on your phone over the landscape mode for better video format.

As of about an hour ago… my 2024 season is officially over.. the last batch of nestlings fledged and took to the skies.
One was trapped under my back porch and perched way up on top of the roll down sunshade.. but managed to grab him, walk him out to the backyard , open my hands, and away he went like greased lightning,, He flew around the house a few times and then perched on the powerlines not far behind the house. A moment or two later, mom sat down next to him and then both took off and started flying around. And then they headed to a patch of oak trees behind the house.
I’m kind of sad to see it all end, but that’s part of the deal.
I should probably tally up all the totals, but I had about 80 Eggs laid .. about 70 hatchlings, four that died, so about 66 fledged.
Something else was nice— this was the second year in a row that I had seven eggs in a cavity where all seven hatched.. and all fledged. Awesome.
