Have 3 PMCA nest box traps, they are starling and sparrow magnets. Some suggestions i got here were to paint them white and paint big black 2 inch circles on the sides. Been working great, just put one up (Nov 7 and nabbed a starling next day).
Anyway, ever used the side swing door to see what you've caught or if weather tripped it? I did, sparrow hit me right in the cheek as it took off. After that used a big mesh chum bag to put the nest box in. Didnt use the side door at all.
This off season I was wondering if by placing a clear piece of plexiglass on the inside to cover the hole would allow me to swing the side door open without taking the trap down, putting it in the bag and opening the door and looking in to see what was captured or if its empty.
Used some old clear CD covers, carefully drilled 4 holes in the corners (its brittle) and screwed them into place. Doesnt interfere with the trip bar, cant be seen from outside and used it Nov 8th....worked great. Fat starling in the trap.
If its a native bird, just remove the front nail and open the door. Allows you to see if its a double sparrow nab, they are really quiet in the trap.
