First bird of the season
Yesterday morning, at 9:00 am, a female stayed for about 1 hour. I watched her go inside the new starling resistant hole. Was glad to see her back this morning and it looks like she is staying. Only her so far. Will keep you posted.

It's possible that it may be an Sy male, they look a lot like females. Listen for the clicking sound at the end of the song, only males make it. Subadult males should be exploring Florida now to start new colonies.

Day number three: This same bird (the one and only) has been staying at the birdhouse....totaling 2 overnight stays. It hangs around until 9 - 10 am then comes back in the evening and stays overnight. I don't see any signs of it making a nest yet. Can someone please tell me if it is a female Purple Martin or a SY male?

24 natural gourds on a satellite rack,9 other gourds scattered around
2-12 compartment trio houses
Rarely see a sparrow or starling,but when I do they don’t last long!
Will have a second satellite rack for the 2022 season and phase out the houses,the martins here strongly prefer natural gourds.
Laura ,that is a sy male. Note the couple of feathers on the breast. Sy males will have one ,two,three single male feathers of the purple color. Sometimes down low towards the tail,sometimes a couple scattered on the breast,the rest of the body looking like a female. When he returns next year he should be all colored in and the following deeply colored and black winged. Let’s hope he gets out and finds himself a female and gets you goin. Good luck

There's always a concern that the original holes need to be cut larger (usually wider) to accommodate a starling-resistant entrance being placed over it. Yes, I was concerned about the fit over the old holes but I didn’t have the tools to make the openings larger. My bird house was left by the prior owner, I believe it is a Trio. I researched the replacement doors and it would have cost $56.00 plus shipping and would take 3-4 weeks for delivery. The time was getting close for the Martins to arrive. So I found the plates for $0.99 each at S&K Manufacturing online with 1 week delivery. All I had to do was drill some holes, get a few screws and put the plates on. It worked great for a fix under $25 with the timing I needed.
My SY male is out there this morning singing along working hard to attract a mate. I saw a couple of Starlings but they didn’t get inside and the Martin shooed them away.

It’s been a week and still no mate yet or any other birds in the birdhouse,. Just the one and only SY male. He works hard all day searching for his mate. He comes back every night around 8:00 p.m. and spends the night in the house. He has the whole place to himself. I look forward to seeing him every morning and hearing him sing. I just hope he finds a mate soon.

Making progress. The male found a mate today. He is trying to get her to go inside the birdhouse. He goes inside and calls to her. So much fun to watch. She is flying overhead and landed on the house once. He’s working hard, hopefully he can get her to stay.
