Yesterday morning, at 9:00 am, a female stayed for about 1 hour. I watched her go inside the new starling resistant hole. Was glad to see her back this morning and it looks like she is staying. Only her so far. Will keep you posted.

Based on your location and time of year are you sure it’s not a SY male? They will still have a grayish belly. Either way congrats!

Martin Colony History: six pair in 2014, have grown to 52 pairs in 2017.

It's possible that it may be an Sy male, they look a lot like females. Listen for the clicking sound at the end of the song, only males make it. Subadult males should be exploring Florida now to start new colonies.
2011- first year trying, a few visitors.
2012-One ASY pair, raised two young, lots of subby visitors. So thankfull.
2013-daily subby visits.

Day number three: This same bird (the one and only) has been staying at the birdhouse....totaling 2 overnight stays. It hangs around until 9 - 10 am then comes back in the evening and stays overnight. I don't see any signs of it making a nest yet. Can someone please tell me if it is a female Purple Martin or a SY male?

2021......to be seen.
24 natural gourds on a satellite rack,9 other gourds scattered around
2-12 compartment trio houses
Rarely see a sparrow or starling, but when I do they don’t last long!
Will have a second satellite rack for the 2022 season and phase out the houses, the martins here strongly prefer natural gourds.

Laura ,that is a sy male. Note the couple of feathers on the breast. Sy males will have one ,two, three single male feathers of the purple color. Sometimes down low towards the tail, sometimes a couple scattered on the breast, the rest of the body looking like a female. When he returns next year he should be all colored in and the following deeply colored and black winged. Let’s hope he gets out and finds himself a female and gets you goin. Good luck

Hi Laura,
Congrats on your SY male. He sure is handsome.
Mite control, heat venting, predator protection and additional feeding during bad weather add up to success.

Laura,

He will not build a nest unless he can attract a female.

It definitely is a male because there is a clicking sound at the end of his song. He's back again today and so much fun to watch and listen to. I did a short video of him singing but wasn't able to attach it to this message. Still working on that.

No new visitors yet. I saw a couple of Purple Martins flying around the house this morning. I’m hoping that it is the male trying to attract a female. Will keep you posted.

So cool you have that SY male working for you now!
What is also really cool is how you where able to place the Clinger entrance plates directly over the Nature House round/keyhole entrances, and the SY male is able to go in and out with no problem. There's always a concern that the original holes need to be cut larger (usually wider) to accommodate a starling-resistant entrance being placed over it. In this case - it appears that's not necessary, making what you did a great, easy option for folks looking to deal with starlings.

Yes, I was concerned about the fit over the old holes but I didn’t have the tools to make the openings larger. My bird house was left by the prior owner, I believe it is a Trio. I researched the replacement doors and it would have cost $56.00 plus shipping and would take 3-4 weeks for delivery. The time was getting close for the Martins to arrive. So I found the plates for $0.99 each at S&K Manufacturing online with 1 week delivery. All I had to do was drill some holes, get a few screws and put the plates on. It worked great for a fix under $25 with the timing I needed.

My SY male is out there this morning singing along working hard to attract a mate. I saw a couple of Starlings but they didn’t get inside and the Martin shooed them away.

How long do the Purple Martins stay? Is it too late for them to make a nest now?

It’s been a week and still no mate yet or any other birds in the birdhouse,. Just the one and only SY male. He works hard all day searching for his mate. He comes back every night around 8:00 p.m. and spends the night in the house. He has the whole place to himself. I look forward to seeing him every morning and hearing him sing. I just hope he finds a mate soon.

Is a week considered a long time for mating?

Making progress. The male found a mate today. He is trying to get her to go inside the birdhouse. He goes inside and calls to her. So much fun to watch. She is flying overhead and landed on the house once. He’s working hard, hopefully he can get her to stay.

I agree it is entertaining to watch how it all goes down. She is playing hard to get, no doubt. He will win her over.
