I’ve been reading older posts on winches - especially braking winches vs. worm gear.
Now I realize I need to oil my old braking winch. I’ve granted DH a reprieve. “We” will be replacing the old winch and too-large cable at the end of August instead of tonight.
For now, which type/brand/weight of oil should I use?
Some posts mentioned “grease.” Where would I put the grease vs. where I’d put the oil? Will Vaseline substitute for “grease?”
Most posts mentioned “do not get oil on the braking ...”
Does someone have a photo of the brake so I know what not to oil?
Thanks for any guidance you can share!

Don't put oil on the brake pad, you will loose the friction you need to lift. If anything grease or oil be bearing the center shaft turns on. I have had a brake winch for 5 years and never oiled or greased anything and it works well.

I would just get a cheap bottle of the old fashion 3n1 oil next time you are at a hardware store. They used to come in little metal white bottles with red writing. Now they are plastic but cheap and good to have around.
