Martin Colony History: 2014 no birds 12 rm trio house
2015 1 ASY pair fledged 5 modified trio to large rooms with 4 TVG under
2016 added second gourd rack with 2 THGs and added third floor to trio
2 ASY pair fledged 10.
2017 added 2 Bo 11 gourds, 6 pair 26 eggs 23 fledged.
2018 adding 2 more THGs and a 4th floor to the trio, hopefully something for everyone. All SRE, cant shoot in town, can't wait for April.
2018 16 pair fledged 65, great summer.
Just finished building a T14 and will be hanging 4 troyer gourds under it so we will see if my returning birds approve of the improvements for 2019.

Do the conely II plates work well to convert the trio round hole entrance to SRE has anyone used them? Mounting them to the outside of the trio door does it interfere with the clip that closes the trio door, is there a better way? Does anyone have recommendations for the best way to accomplish this conversion? Even though i trap the Starlings i can't rest easy having round hole entrances.
Thanks for any advice or opinions,Bob

hi i have done 100's converting to conely 2's on my 20 trio houses and we converted all the trios at Griggsville also. Get scrape piece of 2x6 lay door with outside up lay conely plate just above spring latch trace with pen at same time drill 4 hole through door. cut 1/8 on outside pen mark with tin snipes than pop rivet plate on with white rivets . no need to sand works great. I had 155 pairs last season and fledged 510. Also have 50 troyer gourds. Call me if you have questions 319-931-3321 Tim Millard at Purple Martin Ridge,Lockridge,Ia.

Bobeteb ... It can be done fairly easy... Just take your time and trace the inside of the Conley11 on the door with in an 1/8 of inch of the Clip that holds the door shut. Then when you cut the hole 1/16 bigger then the opening that you drew on the door, it should be just find... Tryed to post a pic, but I must be doing something wrong.. it didn’t show up ..

Sorry about that..

Thanks Mattt,,, It was my winter project for my Satilite Site.. I switch the doors to Conley11’s on two Trio Houses with expanded rooms for my Satilite Site at the Golf Course... Also they (the Golf Course) had two Heath Houses that they said I could expand the rooms and change the entrance to Conley11s on those too. So I did.. Hope this will get rid of some of the Starlings and help the Martins fill safer..

Thanks Tim and Dave for your response, it was very helpful. Knowing it has worked well for you gives me confidence to do it to my Trio.
Just need to order some plates and get going on the project.

I use the Trio crescent and excluder doors on my Trio houses. They keep 99% of the starlings out. They work great. The wing entrapment protector works well on the crescent openings but the excluder openings are to wide.

I've had a Treo Castle for 15 years. And several times I was prepared to convert it. But I am glad I didn't. This house has been a Martin magnet, luring birds that are used to round holes. I found after I moved to another location and moved the Treo, that this was where all of the birds gravitated towards. Only after a few years did the birds branch out and colonize my gourds, which have SRH''s.

Of course I would never use a round hole on anything larger than 6x6. This has long been determined to be the size that discouraged Starlings. I will always have a mix of round holes with 6x6 compartments and SRH's with large compartments or gourds. I believe that it is best to let the Martins decide.

I've been trying to attract Martins to a vacation home that I have in Arkansas for three years and have to date only had SRH's. This year, I will put up a house with round holes and 6x6 compartments. This is what everyone else in the area uses.
