Martin Colony History: Started my Colony in 2008 with 32 gourds and one ASY pair. As of 2017 I had 106 cavities with 106 pair.

Anyone have any experience on how far the porch should be below the bottom of this style entrance. The usual 1/8" ?

Thanks

Jack

I'd not be as confident at Matt about placing the excluder II at one-half inch. I had starlings breach some of mine, but I'm under a lot of starling pressure -- tons and tons -- ha -- in park colonies. I'd go one-fourth to one-eighth.

Jack,
John and Ed are right on.
I was basing my 1/2" above the floor confidence on the track record of the Trio Excluder doors.
Even though they are 1/2" above, they are also the original Excluder, which is a bit of a different animal (the original has taller pegs, and is a bit smaller at the center compared to the Excluder II).
My apologies. Your query was indeed about the Excluder II.

I should also add, that given John's post in reference to his Exlcuder II experience, it was very wrong on my part to convey that the Excluder and Excluder II performed the same, at similar porch heights.
I definitely learned something.

Ed, Matt & John,

Thank you all for your expertise. I originally set them at 1/8" and after about 10 days they have either been reluctant to enter or haven't figured them out yet. I thought that maybe I had the porch too close. Given your input I will leave them at 1/8 above the porch and they should figure it out eventually. Hard to count but I have somewhere around 60 to 70 Martin's here now, and boy has it been windy!

Thank you all again!

Jack
