Changing pole

I only have one house and pole right now and I want to put a multipurpose pole where my telescoping pole is. If I put the multipurpose pole about 5-7 feet over and remove the telescoping pole, will the one pair that I have not mind the change?

I am sure you are holding your breath for one if not both of them to return. With only one nesting pair and migration dangers it is nerve racking.

If they do return, they won't mind that little change at all. I did the same thing year 2 after having only one nesting pair. Not only location, I changed housing. Then year 3 added a second house. Then year 5, I changed housing again and moved both houses about ten feet. Mine have always adapted and my colony has grown.

You are fine and I hope you gain additional pairs as well!

I have made many changes over the years but always added housing after the martins arrived. Any removals would be done before the next years arrival. I would not feel comfortable removing housing while the martins are in residence. The logic I received on this forum was that the birds would have time to adjust to the new setup for an entire season. I totally changed out three gourd racks and two houses over a three year period with no adverse effects. Good luck

Personally, if the martins have already returned and selected a cavity, I would not move the housing.
Adding the new pole with additional housing shouldn't present a problem. JMO. Hope you have a great season.
