Perplexing bird behavior,,,,,,,,,,,

While my morning hunt was going on a Grackle showed up for breakfast and when he saw the two sparrows I had on the ground he walked over cocked his head sideways and then stood on one of them. I had a Morning Dove come in a few minutes and do the same thing.

Any ideas as to why this behavior?
