I set up my ST-1 using the sparrow nesting material I removed yesterday. Today, both sides of the trap were closed and 1 male was in the holding compartment, where I had provided bread & water. I now have bait for catching more! He can cheep all he wants to now!
Is HOSP an acronym for house sparrow?

Yup, It is. Hope you catch many more, it is hard to catch male sparrows in traps when they wise up to them.
PMCA member and Martin fanatic....
2011 A pair of subbies fledged three young but none returned in 2012
2015 One Pair of subbies came and stayed a few nits but got chased away by Bluebirds and Tree swallows.
2017 0ne pair of subbies nested and fledged 4 young
2018 Tree Swallows AGAIN chased away any martins that wanted to nest
2019 Same old story................

For some strange reason (if anybody knows, please tell me) the United States Geological Survey is responsible for maintaining most bird banding information. They also identify each bird species with a four letter "alpha code". The complete list can be found at:

Mark , I am going to guess at this, but maybe its because they are in charge of the topographical maps and in conjunction with the banding they can keep better track of where they are banded and/or found.

My st1 trap has four in the center compartment as i am typing. The male that was being very aggressive toward my martin pair took the bait about 1 hour ago. Not to worry another one will show his nasty face before sunset.

I started out using white bread and then added nesting material (torn out from my martin house). I caught one after adding the nesting material, but nothing in the last 3 days.

I am using white flour tortilla's. They love them but so do grackles so you must monitor all of your traps. Also make sure you tear up the tortillas into small pieces.
