I have one nesting pair ,maybe two this year my first ever. My plans are to put up a gourd rack that has the capability to handle 15 gourds as designed presently.

How would you approach this next year ?

1.Put up all 15 with all entrances open.

2.Put up all 15 with selected entrances blocked.

3. Put up only five and add groups of 5 more as the birds come in and need more housing.(If they come in at all LOL)

Hello Dick,
I would do # 2 and open more when they start to come in! Depending on how many sparrows and starlings you have around I would tell you to open all of them but they would get in and crate havoc on your colony! Do you have these birds around? If so then stick to #2 and if not then do #1!!!!! That is what I did last year!!! Thanks and if I can answer more of your questions or be any help to you, feel free to ask! And good luck your first year and hope you have a great season!!!! John!

I have sparrows and have an eradication ongoing project. I have never seen a starling on site to date but have seen some in the general area from time to time.

Thanks for the info and your help, just one more off shoot question.

How many off the 15 would you open at the first offering??

Hello Dick,
I would start with 7 holes opened first and then gradually take more off as the martins starts to fill them up! Take care of those nasty sparrows though!!!! HA! Good luck! John!
