The third year of having a martin house has been the charm for me. We finally have martins nesting! They came in early April and seem to hang around for a while and then started to go into the boxes. I checked the nest boxes recently and found one nest started. It looks as though we have two pair of martins now. We have just sat on our glider and enjoyed watching and listening to them.

That's great. I assume these are ASY birds (males dark purple). SY birds should really flow into Georgia in next few days and I bet you pick up a few more pairs. (I wish I had that glider in a park where I manage some sites.)

Celia,

Congrats on your pairs. It sure is worth the wait when you can sit back and enjoy them. You'll be sure to get some SY's like JPhn said.

Good Luck,

Ken.

 I'm so thrilled. Yesterday April 29th, we watched as 6 female martins scouted round and round our new Martin House. My husband built it, to exact specifications. It's a two storey, and has 18 compartments. Once they decided which house they wanted, it wasn't but an hour later, that they came with pieces of material stuffed in their tiny beaks, into the hole and quickly back out. As of 5 p.m. today, they are still busy.
I haven't noticed a male as of yet? Can anyone tell me, do they come later on? I've become a couch potato the past couple of days. I don't want to miss a thing. It's been 5 years since I've had them, and was worried that a disease had killed some of them. The holes the first bunch have chosen are facing the west. One has moved into a south hole.
FYI.
We are located on the north shore of Lake Erie, between Port Rowan and Port Burwell.
