Swift? Swallow? What?
I wish I had a photo, but don't at this time... Just noticed a martin-sized, martin-looking bird with lots of white on belly, straight tail tinged in white sitting on martin gourd rack... just from this description can anyone ID this bird?... and if I need to intervene... The birds have just finished making nests so would assume if this bird has set up home in a gourd, it would also have a nest. ---- We have an Alamo house with 4 gourds underneath - and another pole with 12 gourds. This bird was on the gourd rack....

Sounds like it might be an Eastern Kingbird.

- Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.
I first thought tree swallow because of sitting on the house...but if tail is tinged in white I too think it could be an eastern kingbird. As far as worrying, no. I don't think either species would attack a martin. A TS might use up a compartment though if you don't erect a box for them nearby.

Looks like the Eastern Kingbird to me! Never heard of this bird! I will look up this guy and see what I can find!
For now, am I to assume it is not a threat to the martins? - and maybe just perching there? Our houses are on a 3 acre lake and we have a pair of Kingfishers that regularly use the gourd rack perch as a lookout for fish. They do not seem to bother the martins in any way. Thanks for the help!
