Some Early Morning Roost Photos Of My Purple Martin Colony

Early this morning June 12, 2012 I took a few roost photos of purple martins gathered around my colony. The martins were just beginning to “spread out” some from the racks, but there were still many clustered on the hanging rods. You can get a good idea of just how many martins are roosting in my colony each night. They are not good photos as I am a rather pitiful photographer! I took these photos just before a heavy rainstorm hit!

I believe we probably have 1000+ martins roosting in our two colonies each night. The martins like the Deluxe and Gemini racks the best to roost on. The martins will pack themselves inside the compact Deluxe racks on the hanging rods and get as close to the inner hub as possible. However, there are SO MANY martins trying to roost in these racks that a lot of martins end up roosting on the exposed cane pole perches. On the Gemini rack, the martins gravitate toward the bottom ring and the inside support bars, but some martins do end up on the top ring.

Roosting inside the gourd racks near the hub and under or behind the gourds provides more protection to the martins from possible owl attacks. The martins have been roosting on the top hanging rods and my cane pole perches, too because there is simply NO MORE ROOM inside the racks!

My two Trendsetters with their wide porches and dividers are covered each night with martins too. The martins are “all over the porches” and roost on the gourd hanging rods that are underneath the bottom of the houses.

I am seeing ASY and SY martins on the racks and houses and fledglings, too. This is the first season I have seen adult martins roosting on the outside on the gourd racks.

I don’t know how long this roosting behavior will last but there are huge numbers of martins here in the evenings. As long as there are still a good number of martins with nestlings, then probably some martins will continue to roost here. I suspect that many of these martins will start congregating at larger communal roosts soon.

And the danger from barred and great horned owls is still very REAL. But so far the owls have not attacked. Possibly the huge number of martins packed together all over the gourd racks and houses does not offer a single target for any owl. Perhaps the owls prefer to select an isolated prey item rather than plunge into a mass of martins. However, in the past owls have readily attack large groups of martin fledglings roosting in the open in our colonies.

Here are a few photos of martins as they are slowly stirring about. Many martins are still inside the gourd racks or covering the Trendsetter porches. We had already had some rain earlier and an even heavier thunderstom was about to hit.

That is something else Steve. Incredible. Do you have some kind of red lights up on each of the poles? Is that red eye predator guard do-dads or something?

I am glad folks like the photos! I wanted to get a panoramic photo of the entire colony with all those martins covering the racks/houses but I couldn't pull it off! It was too dark that early in the morning. So I took photos of several sections of the colony.

At night the martins are really packed in to those Deluxe racks! The martins are almost piled on top of each other as they try to get as close to the center hub as possible. I thought about trying to get some close up shots of all those martins but I would have to get close, use the flash and that might "spook" the martins.

The martins also roost on my three tier Super System crossbar rack and are lined up on the crossbars. But they much prefer the Deluxe and Gemini racks.

Matt, the light is a reflection from my outdoor security light I believe. That light is located about a hundred feet southwest of my colony on a tall utility pole. The security light was still on and about to turn off.

Now that could be a start of a Hitchcock movie. Gee, I would think the owls and hawks would have a field day. Good luck Steve.

Steve, that's really impressive! How many years in that location did it take to build your colony as far as number of pairs?

Steve You have a Beautiful Colony. Most people could look at those pictures and not realize the days and hours You have spent to make that colony what it is today.

Not to even mention the dollars invested in each of your systems. Managing your location for all of the predators that would be drawn to such a feast as young Martins and cutting the grass and nest checks as well.

Thank you for all the young that you have raised to propagate all of the new colonies around you, some near and some much farther away.
Colony started in 2002

Offering 82 Troyer Horizontal Gourds

2018 - 45 PAIR - FLEDGED 203 MARTINS

Thanks for all the comments. This evening another huge number of martins came in to roost and many of my gourd racks/houses are covered! I am now noticing many more independent martin fledglings rather than ASY/SY martins roosting out in the open. Perhaps the adults are going to larger communal roosts.

Hey Virgil,

I moved from Tallahassee, Florida to northwest Louisiana in December 2004 and started my new martin colony in 2005. I moved next door to my good friend Bob Bozeman who already had a large super colony.

Here are the stats:

2005—81 pairs of martins (All of Bob’s overflow went to my new colony.); 2006—175 pairs; 2007—254 pairs; 2008—309 pairs; 2009—315 pairs; 2010—337 pairs; 2011—331 pairs (This was the year of the tornado which devastated my colony; I was amazed that many martins survived and re-nested.); 2012—347 pairs

We have an open location, few starlings and sparrows, and an abundant martin population in this area of northwest Louisiana.

Steve

Hey James,

Thank you so much for those kind words!

I have put a lot of work and resources into my martin colony and it has paid off with many martins raised. I am sure there are many local colonies that have benefited from all the martins Bob and I have fledged from our two colonies.

It can be stressful at times when managing a huge martin colony, particularly during periods of diminished food supply or when a violent storm strikes like that one in 2011.

I know you take great care of your martin colony and fledge a bunch of youngsters each season, too. So you are also helping the martin population grow.

Thanks again for your comments.

WOW - Steve, nice!!!

Do you still have martins around June 29th? If you do, my sister is coming through Shreveport then, and if they have time, I may try to get her to come by.

Hey Kathy,

This season the martins seem to be about a week to ten days earlier than usual in their nesting cycle. Most of my martins have already fledged their young and by June 29th there will be just a few pairs left I believe. I will have some July martin pairs.

Your sister is welcome to visit, but I don't think there will be many nesting martins around at that time. Just let me know if she plans to visit so I will be home.

Oh Steve,

That is truly amazing the amount of birds you have roosting on your gourd racks. Thank you so much for the photos and the information you've provided about your site. I always enjoy reading your wonderfully written information.

Again, beautiful site and P/M colony. Makes my 40-45 pr. colony look very little. Keep them coming, the rest of us need increased supplies.
