Alberto has formed off of the S Carolina coast - Everyone on the Atlantic coast from S Carolina northward needs to monitor the forecast track of this system.

Geez.... We don't usually get these systems affecting the Carolinas until late August/September.

Depending on where it goes, it would really wreak havoc with our colonies.

Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.

Wow. Even the Houston weather guys and girls were talking about this one. We sat here (hunkered down) as Hurricane Ike threw all he had at us. I have great sympathy for anyone in the path of Alberto. I hope and pray he stays small and moves away fast.
Sincerely,
Laverne

I'm concerned and watching it as well. Our wheat crop is insured but regarding our martins we can just hope and pray Alberto is a nonevent.

Martin Colony History: Start 2009 with one pair. Upgraded from S&K houses to two Trendsetter 12's with gourds beneath in 2013. I have experienced job, pet, and parental losses since '13. The Purple Martins lift my spirits and remind me how life continues forward by flying their little selves from Brazil back to my yard. As one forum person once told me, chin up DebA, look at the martins. Danger all around but yet they soar in the sky without a care in the world.

Growing up in Kansas since I was five, I haven't grown up with hurricanes that's for sure. But I was born in Florida and I have an early memory of my "real" dad (my step dad raised me since five and has always been my daddy) having my sister and I and we were on a beach in some kind of shack like structure. It was rainy and the ocean was full of waves. I remember him pointing undoubtedly out to sea and saying to me, see it that's the hurricane. I was probably 3-4 and I thought he was pointing to a good sized piece of driftwood on the beach. So for quite awhile I thought a hurricane was a piece of driftwood. LOL. I would assume my dad knew what he was doing and didn't have us truly in harms way, but back then who knows. I survived anyway.

I hope all stay safe including our beloved bird friends.
