Today was a very nice spring day, reached approx 62 degrees, was sunny with little wind. I was outside this afternoon enjoying my colony which has grown to about a dozen pair so far. They were hanging around all morning and coming back throughout the afternoon with the males fighting, all exploring the new gourds that were hung this year, and just socializing as martins will.
Suddenly, my large 4 year old red/rust doberman female, who was asleep at my feet, jumped up and was looking right me and growling like she was going to bite my head off. Then she started to bark directly at me like there was a cat on top of my Bush/Cheney cap that I still wear. Then I realized it wasn't me that my doberman was about to attack as I started to hear this loud thumping/beating sound coming from behind me and I was covered in this shadow of something coming down, falling, or whatever.
Well, the shadow passed me and I realized all the ruckus from my doberman was from a very low flying wild turkey that was flying directly over within 15-20 feet of our heads and finally landed approx 50 yards from our yard in a nearby field. They sure do make a noise, and my doberman evidently heard the Turkey coming from quite a ways out .
I then went inside very relieved and took my heart medication as I was sure my doberman had gone mad from when she killed that 'Pole-Cat' a few weeks back, and I was going to have to put her down and probably have to take rabies vaccinations myself from being bit. I wouldn't care that much if the wife left, but I sure don't want anything to happen to my dog. But she's fine. My wife is fine too.
Enjoying, relaxing, SURPRISE!

I've been Turkey hunting all week and you've got them flying thru your yard !! Good thing they don't eat PM's.

Yea, but my yard is surrounded by thousands of acres of Kentucky countryside and woods. There is quite a bit of deer, wild turkey, even a coyote or two around here.Ken Ripley wrote:I've been Turkey hunting all week and you've got them flying thru your yard !!
