Watching babies hatch - Priceless!
The babies are hatching right on schedule in my nest-cam gourd. You know it, I am glued to the TV screen! My PM pair are the BEST parents ever. Mom cleans up the mess and gets some well-needed nourishment by eating the eggshells after the babies hatch. Then she sits on the nestling to keep it warm. Mom and Dad are taking turns feeding the three that have hatched so far. When Dad comes in, after he feeds them, he just sits there gazing at them in awe for a while, gives them a hug, then he leaves them once again to find something good for them to eat. It's so cute!
The naked little nestlings are so adorable, no wonder their parents dote on them.

- Martin Colony History: 2010-2014 located in Slidell LA. Gourd rack with 16 gourds. Max of 2 pairs during this short period in Slidell. Plenty of fledglings.
2014-present.. moved to Broussard LA. Same Gourd Rack but added a 6 room house (modified from a 12 room)
2020: after a long drought of nothing, 4 pairs and 4 nests, 23 eggs total.
6 fledges.
2021: 9 pair, 47 eggs
36 hatchlings
30 fledged
2022: about 12 pairs.. many eggs, all fledged.. only had one hatchling die.. probably because of our schnauzer. :(
2023: 16 pairs. So far about 60 chicks with about a dozen eggs to go.
2024: 13 pair. About 60 eggs
2025: 14 pairs .. 69 eggs.
He's not in awe Jeanne- he's wondering if his carefree days are over! :-D

David,
My husband would agree with your comment.
Astrid,
So good to hear from you. Watching those naked nestlings trying to lift up their scrawny little necks when their parents come in with the bugs is a hoot and the love and the care that the parents give to them just warms my heart. Though, of course, you know I am fretting the whole time I'm watching what goes on in the nest. But, it's all good. This hobby is so fulfillingand rewarding at the best of times. I won't mention the worst of times here. I want to enjoy this moment of peace.
