unusual ducks in N. Alabama

Hi everyone and hoping for a Happy Martin year. We gave up on getting Martins last year, but something always brings me back. We put our house up for sale and figured we would just forget it for awhile. I find myself looking out the windows already. This is not exactly about Martins, but four Buffelhead ducks arrived yesterday and are enjoying our Lake. I had to look on the Internet to see what they were. They are absolutely beautiful and you can see pictures of them on the net. Does anyone know if it is unusual for them to be in North Alabama? Since we got Tree Swallows here, we may start seeing all kinds of unusual things. There is still plenty of room for Martins, just in case. Hope everyone has plenty of food for them.

Hi Norma.

I'll bet that was neat. They are gorgeous, little ducks.

Your area is definitely within their normal, wintering range.

Buffleheads are incredibly beautiful. We have them here, right in town. They are one of my favorites.

I have looked at a lot of sights, but can't figure out if the ducks will stay here and for how long. Also, will they breed here if we build nest boxes? I know our Bluebirds and TRES won't like it. We welcome all critters and I would love to see babies. Thanks for any info. Norma
