I recently bought 6 tunnels for houses with the Conley 2 entrance. I put them on 2 sides of my T14. I did this because my gourds (THG) with this style opening have received no attention at all from the starlings. I have observed the starlings looking in the C2 openings, but I have never actually seen one go in, they always fly away with a beak full of material. Today I lowered the house and all 6 cavities have grass and sticks in them, the stuff I have seen the starlings carrying. The cavities are nowhere near full, as it would be with a hosp, just trashy. I have seen no hosp at the house since I eliminated 3 earlier.
Has anyone else had any experience with the starlings breaching the C2 entrance?
Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,

I had the same problem last year. You need to raise the porch levels to about 1/16 of an inch below the hole. That will keep Starlings out. The Martins will have no problem negotiating the higher porch level.

Martin Colony History: We've hosted purple martins since around 2002 and currently have 5 gourd racks with 22 Excluder gourds, 9 Super gourds, 18 Troyer gourds, 4 Bo gourds, 6 natural gourds, and 3 homemade boxes for martins to use.

I've had the same problem this year. A pair of starlings made a nest in one of my troyers with the Conley 2 entrance. I watchd them enter with no problems at all.
