It was a full house last night wasn't it? There were also two other active nests on either side of the nest cam gourd and those nestlings have fledged as well. The nestlings don't always return to the same cavity each night-so they could be having a sleepover with the 'cousins' or appreciating a night alone in an empty gourd!

- Martin Colony History: Colony established May 20, 2017 after three unsuccessful years. Persistent and aggressive Tree Swallows plagued the site, but beyond learning - and practicing - to control them, was the return in 2017 of a 2016-SY-M previously unable to find a mate. As a handsome ASY-M, he brought along two females and a swagger that soon put the Tree Swallow issue to rest. As the anchor pair, he and his mate hatched all six of their eggs into fat and healthy babies into what settled in to be a three-pair, flourishing new colony with up to 11 birds total, including 3 SY-M trouble makers.
Thanks for mentioning the other cavity thing. As a first year (nesting) landlord, been seeing my fledglings doing exactly that, e.g., my anchor pair, with six fledglings have been all over the gourd rack. With several empty gourds, all equipped with clean, little mounds of pine straw, had already noticed parents were - apparently - spending time in other gourds, maybe even sleeping in other gourds once in awhile, especially the dads. Now the youngsters are doing it alsoForum Admin wrote:It was a full house last night wasn't it? During the morning, all of the birds are staying gone longer and longer - gets sadly quiet - then about noon many return and it's like a country reunion, then gone again in the afternoon, then back considerably before dark, lotsa short flights, babies clearly flying well still begging parents for a free handout, then everyone retiring early, especially last night when a cool spate of weather flew thru here.
The nest cam has been valuable for this new landlord, e.g., when something happens that I don't understand, I run to the nest cam to see what your birds are doing, and/or what the Forum is saying.
Thanks again.
