Question about 1st year at a new location

That would be nice. Nest checks gives you a chance to discover problems while there is still time to correct them. I also enjoy counting the eggs and chicks as they hatch. I was wondering about those gourds. How do they manage to get in and out without a porch? I guess in the wild, were they come from, porches would be hard to find. I think you and your martins would enjoy porches. I plan on adding another house this year, once the sub adults arrive. I want to dedicate it to subbys as they can cause some trouble in the rest of the colony. By giving the subbys their own house, maybe the will play nice. If I keep the new house closed every year until the subbys arrive, it will cause the previous years residents to find new housing, sort of like a forced dispersal. As martins get older they tend to arrive earlier in the year. The subbys always arrive last. The previous years subbys will have one year of experience and be ready to start new colonies when they return as adults. We'll see if my plan works.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have good news and bad news to report.
The good news is I'm gonna have plenty of time to watch for purple martins the next few weeks.
The bad news is I fell from about 10 feet from a ladder while working in my shop around 6 pm last night. My left wrist is broken in three or four places. Have an appointment with a specialist in about an hour. Fell like surgery is in my near future. My son was almost directly beneath me and saw what was happening. He did his best to catch me and he did break the fall tremendously. Very thankful it wasn't a lot worse than just the broken wrist.

Ouch, not fun. Hope the surgery goes well. After, you'll have lots of time to dream and plan. Get well soon!
