Finally an arrival

- Martin Colony History: 2010 we had just one sy male all summer
2011 we had the same male come back but eventually brought home a female and had five eggs but were infertile
2012 we had our first two chicks but lost them
2013 we fledged six and had two pair
2014 we fledged 13 from four pairs
2015 we fledged 24 from 6 pairs
This is my third year with about four or five visitors every year so this year im moving my pole about fifty feet .For the past two years its been right on a barbed wire fence line and im a little afraid they dont like it.

Any more sightings? It is not uncommon for the first arrival (s) not to spend all day long at your site. I have noticed my first arrivals will show up and sometimes disappear for a day or so just making a real quick check in. If they ASY male starts sticking around you can bet he will attract some females.

I wouldn't think a barbed wire fence would make a difference,but you never know. The martin house we had when I was a kid was up against a barbed wire fence, and we had martins the first year.

Yes they were here this morning about a hour later than they have been coming.(9:30) There were 2 ASY males and 1 female. They didn't stay but a minute. I saw them early this morning down the road at the elderly ladys house. I'm certain they are her birds just visiting here like they did last year.

I'm still watchin and waiting. I have a visitor (an ASY male) that comes by every day. Sometimes he brings another one with him but they are not interested, and none stay too long. Still good to see and hear them though.

Well, we bought a new, expensive martin house this year and haven't seen one purple martin!

- Martin Colony History: First started in Gretna, La in 1969 with a small homemade house, have had martins ever since at 2 different homes in Texas
SJR, you still may get some anytime in the next 3 months. A new site often gets martins much later than established sites.

Our two pair showed up yesterday and checked their new home out! They have been coming for several years now, raise their babies, and return the following year. I have no idea why we can't get more than two pair, but I'm a happy camper!
