Very interesting research information you shared, there, Dennis. Thanks. Hmmm...Excluder II and Big Bo-11...two more gourd styles I don't already have and just might have to add to my "variety pack gourd rack" some day!

HERE ARE SOME PICTURES OF THE COLONY I WORKED ON YESTERDAY.
THESE ARE LAST YEAR PICTURES. THIS COLONY HAS BEEN GOING ON GO FOR MORE THEN 25 YEARS. I JUST HATE TO SEE IT END. MAYBE SOME ONE WILL BUY THE HOUSE AND KEEP IT GOING. A NICE LITTLE HOUSE IN HIGHLAND SPRINGS VA., DEAL, DEAL.

Dennis, it would almost be a sin for someone to not keep it going. It looks great.

Martin Colony History: Had a colony many years ago which dwindled over a couple of years and then did not return. Kept trying each year for almost 20 years and finally had a small success in 2011 with two pairs nesting. Colony has grown slowly each year with 22 pairs in 2015. In 2016 my gourd rack of 18 gourds filled up so I added 4 more gourds and then put up a small rack of 6 gourds. All of those were claimed within a few days so I believe I have at least 25 pairs this year.

Thanks for sharing all your pics Dennis. For some reason I thought you left those two natural gourds unpainted. Anyway, got my six naturals finished and two of them are flying now. I left mine natural and only put a clear sealer on them. I figure it was good enough for our Indian ancestors to host PM colonies so it may help me finally attract a couple

That's a nice looking colony site in Highland Springs. Those racks and the house look really high but maybe its a trick of the camera. Its great that you take care of the site. I'll gladly volunteer my time if you ever need some help.

Dennis,
Sounds good.
Don't worry about pleasing everyone. Just go with what is best for the majority of those planning to attend. The larger the group the more conflicts will arise. You will quickly find that getting a date becomes hard.
With that in mind I will begin making your chore more difficult. :)
Assuming you are looking at a weekend date I'm booked on June 12th, 18th,and 19th.
On weekdays I'm booked on:
June 6th, 8th,13th,15th,and the 27th.

You do realise that on any other day you will be asking me to tear myself away from watching my own birds  I'm willing to make the sacrifice :!:

Carolyn C,
We miss you here in VA. So sorry you can't join in the fun with us. I'm so glad you were able to get martins quickly where you live now in TX! Congrats!

For those martineers interested in attending a group get-together with other VA martin folks, I'd like to respectfully make a suggestion. It is my understanding that Dennis Jenkins has graciously offered to open up his home and martin colony in Powhatan, VA (near Richmond, I believe) for a martin gathering, and he is willing to organize it. But since this Forum is also used by folks all over the nation, perhaps it would be best if we Virginians who are interested in getting together could try to individually and privately share with Dennis the dates we are available, and discuss/arrange the details of a martin gathering--either thru the Private Messaging system or thru sharing our home email addresses with him (where we can file/store messages without overloading our Forum Private Message mailboxes.) (I do not recommend giving him your personal email address by posting it here on this internet page, because I have heard that there are ways that spammers who don't even read the Forum can detect it and start sending you spam.) I'm just trying to keep our Virginia Martin group from becoming a nuisance to readers in the rest of the country, or even those in Virginia who cannot participate in a group gathering---because I believe our posts make our topic jump back up to the top of the Forum list every time we submit a post entry; and as Bill accurately mentioned, it is going to be very complicated to try to figure out what dates the majority of interested folks can attend an event. I will contact Dennis so we can find out how he would like us to communicate with him, and he can post that information here, and then we can conduct our communications and arrangements outside of the Forum system. Once the date and time of the gathering has been finalized, Dennis can post an announcement about the event here, to let previous and new readers know about it. I'm only referring to privately handling (off-Forum) all the details (the organizational process) of a martin social gathering; for anything else that would be of interest to all Virginia martin landlords, and perhaps even national readers, including scout and subadult arrivals in our local area, predator/competitor problems, or sharing info. about (or photos of) our colonies (as Dennis requested when he initiated this topic) I think we will be fine in continuing to share those subjects here. That's just a thought to consider.

I am very sorry, everybody. I made a suggestion that we try to work out the details of our VA martin gathering thru private emails, rather than thru Forum posts, and passed on some other suggestions to try to help with the organization of the event, but I made those suggestions without being asked, first, and I feel that has caused the get-together to be canceled. I have sent an apology to Dennis for offering my comments without being asked, and I do hope he will reconsider and continue with the martin get-together. We are all in this thing together and I don't want there to be any hard feelings between us. I hope we can work together for the conservation of Purple Martins and for making new martin friends. Again, I'm so sorry for over-stepping my bounds. Kathy
