RXpurple, I don't have any .22 cal air rifles. Mine are a .20 Beeman R-1, a .20 cal Beeman R-7, and a .177 cal Beeman R-7. I do not believe that you would go wrong with either in the R-9 platform. While the .177 shoots a little faster, the .22 will have more impact force when it hits its target. So, either should be fine from what I know about the R-9. I don't need one, but am considering adding one to my R series, but who knows if I will ever do it.
Fatman608, it is up to your gun to determine which is best to use. The domed pellets offer better flying charteristics and actually better wound penetration and damage than any other style of pellets. I prefer domes, as do 2 of my guns, but the R-7 .20 cal, actually prefers a hollow point, with a domed pellet a very close second. All I can advise you to do, is get your gun broken in (500-1000 shots) with any pellet. Also, get your scope sighted in on whatever pellet you are using for this break-in shooting. Then, get a pellet sampler from Straightshooters, and shoot 10 pellets of each kind at separate targets. Do not readjust your scope for this test, nor your shooting distance. Always use the same aimpoint, no matter where on the paper you are hitting. In this test, you are not after hitting the bullseye, but checking the size of the grouping of 10 shots. As long as you are hitting the paper, that is what matters. After doing this, your gun WILL tell you what to feed it. Then, buy as many of these pellets as you can afford so that you get them all from the same batch. After receiving the pellets the your gun prefers, resight your scope to shoot them at the range you will be doing most of your shooting from. Of course, all of this is assuming your are using a precision air rifle. If you are using an inexpensive air rifle, you will lucky to get any kind of groups at 25 yards that are 4" or less. 1" or less grouping is what is needed to be really accurate and have a 90% kill rate.
