Have you considered going to his house and speaking with the people that live there about putting up his houses and caring for them? The houses might still be up and need some cleaning or other maintenance. They might appreciate someone (like yourself) continuing his legacy by caring for the colony. Just a thought. Maybe at least send them a letter introducing yourself with your contact # and offer your services. They might be receptive to the idea.

I looked up his old house on Google Maps. It know it's blurry, but does this look like gourds to you???

The left looks to be gourds, the right say may or may not be. I would go by there now and see if you can tell if the housing is still up and if not, try again in another month or so, once they start to arrive in the midwest. Even if the housing is hidden from the roadway, this spring you will be able to tell if there is a colony back there or not, you'll see them buzzing around and hear them as well.
