Hi, Tammy! I'm a ways north of you, in Enid. Had a lot of lookers last year (subbies) and some stayed a while, but no one stayed for the season. I decided that I do not like my original housing, so went on kind of a rampage a couple of weeks ago -- gourd rack, gourds, predator guards, more traps, etc. -- and am currently attempting to assemble the pole and brake winch apparatus in my living room. It never occurred to me that in a town of 50,000 there wouldn't be one single decent post hole digger (only some really flimsy ones), so I had to order one from Amazon. Tomorrow is hole-digging day, winter storm or no winter storm! Chances are you will see Martins before they arrive in our area, but I'll be posting in the forum as soon as they start arriving here. Hope you'll be posting as well! Best wishes for many Martins at your place this year! Nancy

Welcome Tammy! You're getting a wonderful start and help from some great people. I'll share some advice from a great old gentleman that he gave me.
"Keep it fun", Mr. Ewert told me. I was really into the aquarium hobby and kept building ever more and larger set ups. Mr. Ewert told me of a friend of his who grew his hobby into too much work. One day he tore down every aquarium and emptied his fish room. What started off as a fun hobby became just a lot of work.
Wouldn't you know it, I did the same thing. I haven't had an aquarium in years and no desire to set one up. I can't let my martin hobby go the same way. So I constantly work on my inclinations to build, build, build. I limit my martin site to make sure it's 90+% fun and < 10% work. Keep fun your focus along with quality housing. Your addition will always be a positive one.

Welcome Tammy! You're onto a great start and have good advice from some wonderful people. I'll throw in some advise that came my way long ago.
"Keep it fun." Mr. Ewert said. He told me a story of an old friend. The two shared their interest in aquarium fish and went to aquarium shows around the state together. The friend built and built and built his aquarium hobby until all his time was spent on maintenance and work. One day he tore his fish room down and sold every last fish and piece of equipment. The hobby became just a lot of work and no fun.
Wouldn't you know, I ended up doing the same thing. Haven't had an aquarium in years and don't care to. I can't do the same with my martin hobby. I constantly work on myself to keep it simple. Martineering should be >90% fun and < 10% work. Like Mr. Ewert said, "Keep it fun." That way you and the martins will have a long, long term relationship.

Welcome Tammy! Start exercising so that you don't hurt yourself when you get that first martin occupant and suddenly break into the all-too familiar Purple Martin Dance! If you have neighbors, they'll think you're crazy, but that is quite OK!!!
Best wishes for a wonderful 2012 martin season!

- Martin Colony History: 2010 we had just one sy male all summer
2011 we had the same male come back but eventually brought home a female and had five eggs but were infertile
2012 we had our first two chicks but lost them
2013 we fledged six and had two pair
2014 we fledged 13 from four pairs
2015 we fledged 24 from 6 pairs
Speaking of the Purple Martin dance, what started off as one of my many passions, has got my wife very excited when the first scout arrives, but she still thinks im a little off when i start doing my purple martin strut when the first one arrives. We dont even have our first nesters yet and im sure i will be bouncing off the ceilings when we do.I know that this year should see us with our founding pair as weve had our firstasy scout return last year with a female but i think a hawk might have taken him as he was only here for a day,but we had many sy males last year and even a few females so this year we should end up with at least two asy scouts. Our fingers are crossed.

Hi Tammy & welcome. Wishing you the best of luck, it sounds like you are already well educated on the Martins. This forum has some of the best people in U.S.A. to help with any questions you might have. I live in Ketchum, Okla. about 60 miles N.E. of you. We had our first scout the 2nd of march last year, the earliest ever for us. By the middle of march we had 13, it was so cold and had snow, we ended up feeding crickets & scrambled eggs for days & days. We have ours trained to feed from a raised platform feeder, but my hubby still likes to use a slingshot to shoot the crickets to them. Its really funny, they follow him all over our 21/2 acres. He could step out the front door & one of our little females will meet him at the porch & fly about three foot in front of him. We had 17 pair last year. This is one hobby you will love, these are the most beautiful & entertaining birds. Again welcome, & good luck. Regards, Carol
