Calling Florida landlords

I have a question for the Floridians out there. I have a friend who just moved to the Orlando area recently. Is it too late for him to put up his house and get any purple martins?

Hello Nesto,
He might have a slim chance on getting SY martins since they all have already moved north but he could pick up an ASY too because of site abandonment or something like that! So the best thing he could do is go ahead and put the house or gourds up and the fledgings or babies that hatched this year will be checking other sites out on the way to Brazil!!! And maybe some SY martins and ASY martins that had no nests will be checking out other sites too! So that is what I would do!!! Thanks John!

I am very new to this.
I just got started last year and put up my first pm house in March.
It wasn't until May 9th that I first attracted three Martins.
A pair of them began building a nest but were usurped by starlings.
Long story short, I did attract martins late last year...actually one year ago yesterday!
Tell your friend to go for it.
Best of luck,
Pedro

Nesto,
I live just 2 miles from the Orlando city limits and I have been a Martin landlord off and on since the 80's. At this time of year, there are still some ASY and SY Males flying around looking for females and nesting sites and your friend might attract these. That would give him a head start for next year.
As far as producing young, the majority of Martins have already mated and laid their eggs. By the end of June they will begin gathering in pre-migratory roosts, getting ready to head for South America.
Although not impossible, it is highly unlikely that any matings and subsequent egg laying will occur from this point on. When you consider the brutal heat we get in July, not to mention the beginning of the Hurricane season, you can see what a blessing this is for the Martins. Mother Nature has everything well thought out!
Best of luck to your friend. By the way, we will be starting a Purple Martin Club for Central Florida in case he's interested.
