Nestbuilding and "roof sitting"

I finally had an SY pair to stay on Wenesday. This morning, she started building a nest. It is was intresting that, while her would fly down with her into the yards behind us, the other ASY males and lone SY male would fly along with her and land on the roofs of houses. Its like they would almost be a look out for them. As soon as the SY pair would return to their compartment, so would the ASY males. After about 8 trips, a few would stay perched on the roofs with two up on the chimneys.

I know it has been discussed before, but anyone have an idea on this behavior? I didn't see it while the ASYs were nestbuilding, other than the males staying close to the females, flying back and forth with her. However today, with the SY female, it seemded the whole colony was involved.

Chuck,

I've been seeing lots of roof-sitting lately, but haven't noticed the behavior you're talking about. My subbies are nest building but seem to be on their own with no lookout help from the ASYs. There is always something to observe and learn.

Hey Patrick,

When the ASys were building, the males would fly with the female, alone.
I have only seen this with the SYs this year.

Chuck,

I'm seeing a lot of my martins hanging out on the roofs of all the 2 story houses that surround me. They have a great vantage from the peak of the roofs...much better than my one story. I live on a street named Long Prairie, so I call our house...can you guess?

The Little House on 'Long Prairie' of course

Well, sice I live on Quail Roost.......

mine is the Martin Roost on Quail Roost!

What is a quail roost anyways? I thought Quail were covey birds. I guess they ran out of names, but, it's better than Flushing Quail!!
